“Meghan!” I call, chasing after her.

She stops mid step and whirls around, fixing a snarl on her face. “What?!”

“I’m sorry...I just wanted to clear something up...Lo and I aren’t together. We’ve never been. We’re just best friends. I swear,” I murmur earnestly.

“Why should I believe you?” she demands, back to her favourite pissy expression.

“Because I’m her boyfriend,” Ryder answers simply, coming up behind me.

And just like Ryder had predicted, Meghan’s mouth hangs open in shock. “Are you serious?” she asks inaudibly.

I nod my head, not fully trusting my voice to remain calm.

“Oh my god!” she exhales, sitting down on the ground, looking miserable. “I...broke up with him! And I said such mean things...because I thought he was cheating on me. With you!”

“I know. He told me. But Meghan, he was really, really upset over it. And you’re obviously just as upset. Maybe you guys should give each other a second chance?” I try.

She looks up at me, her eyes all misty. She nods her head hesitantly before giving me a small smile. “I’m so sorry I’ve been so bitchy to you.”

“It’s okay,” I whisper, fixing her a small tentative smile in return.

“Yup, Faye gets it. She’s constantly treating all my girl friends horribly too,” Ryder lies, shrugging.

I glare at him trying to silence him with my look.

“Really? So you don’t hate me?” Meghan asks.

“No...you didn’t have to treat me like crap, but it’s alright,” I mumble.

Meghan nods her head before standing up, brushing off her shorts. “You’re cool Faye. Thank you,” she murmurs, heading towards the girls’ cabin.

The moment she’s out of ear shot, I turn on Ryder. My hands are on my hips and I scowl at him. But he merely chuckles, watching me.

“Can you please not embarrass me?” I hiss sourly.

“I was only playing. Relax, will you?” he grins, taking my hand.

Sighing, I allow myself to be led to a little grassy, open area. Ryder sits down and pats the empty spot beside him for me to sit.

“Okay, so I need you to just go along with me, alright?” Ryder warns as he pulls his cell phone out of his pocket.

He scrolls through his contacts as I sit down beside him, intensely aware of how close we are.

“Hey bro!” he murmurs into the phone.

“It’s all good. I’m going to put you on loudspeaker, alright? Faye and I have something to tell you,” he continues before turning the loudspeaker on.

“Wait a second! Are you guys fighting again?” Lo demands from the other end of the line.

“Not quite. You know, the whole reason you sent us here was so we wouldn’t be at each other’s throats, right?” Ryder ascertains.
