Chapter 1: How it all started

“It is only in adventure that some people succeed in knowing themselves – in finding themselves.” – Andre Gide

“Who…who are you?” I asked taking a step back, floating in the white light. The woman with honey-colored hair, curling around her face and falling in loose curls down her back, smiled. Her brown eyes looked down upon me as her frilly, gray, long, loose sleeve shirt and flowing, matching gray skirt flapped behind her in the gentle breeze, giving her an air of respect.

“That is of no importance…the question is: who are you?” she said as she stroked my cheek.

“I’m…Alexandra,” I stammer taken aback by her sweet voice and the warmth of her hand.

She smiled sweetly at me, “Yes…but what are you?”

“Human…I-I think…” I answer confused.

“Are you sure?” she asks, fading away.

“W-Wait! No! Don’t go!” I yell, waking up with a start. I find myself covered in sweat as I sit up slowly.

“What…am…I?” I repeat as if in a daze, rubbing my eyes. I get up slowly and walk to the kitchen a million questions dancing around in my head. I shake my head, hoping to break that already delicate state of dreams disappearing into the subconscious as reality takes over and the brain fully awakes.

As I sit down, my cell phone rings. I moan and get up again, trudging over to the counter.

“’Lo…” I say slowly.

“Alexa! You’re still asleep?” my best friend’s, Blaise’s, voice could be heard.

“Mhm…”

“Oh my gosh! Wake up! It’s Saturday! Let’s meet up! Oh, and happy birthday!” she chattered away.

“Thanks…” I say not really paying attention to the things she’s saying.

“How about this afternoon at four?” she inquired.

“Sure,” I yawned.

“See ya then!” Blaise called closing the phone.

I mimicked her, setting the phone down and slumping over to my chair.

“Good morning, birthday girl!” my mom’s cheery voice sounded in my ears. I waved sleepily, staring at the table trying to fully wake.

“How’s my girl doing?” my dad came and hugged me. I remained motionless, blinking now and then as if someone in a daze.

My parents looked at each other, then at me.

“It’s morning…gimme two hours to wake up…” I told them placing my head on the cold, glass table top.

They smile sweetly, nod and go outside.

‘C’mon! Wake up!’ a voice in my head said.

“Even my thoughts are trying to wake me up…” I groan.

After a while, I decide to get some cereal. Before I got a chance to understand what was happening, the milk rose up to my eye level.

“Uh……” I gape. Suddenly, it lands in the bowl with a splash! splattering everything within a ten inch radius.

“Shoot…” I mutter tearing a paper towel and cleaning the milk up. Then I stopped and replayed in my mind, what had just happened.

“Did I…nah…” I shake my head, shaking the event away, and returned to eating my cereal.
