                                                    Chapter 28:

                                              Alexa – Blaise

“The fire breathes…the fire feeds. It grows and grows and seems to have no end…” - Skillet

I took a deep breath and looked at both pathways leading away from the school gates and into the actual school. The one on my right went under a couple of arches connected with some wood made to protect you from the excessive sun and the rain – not that it ever rains here; it ended up in front of the main doors. The one on my left, however, ducked between the garden and the side of the school until it opened up to a cemented area with a small garden that had tiny, yet colorful flowers and ivies climbing up and around the fence.

I looked both ways and finally, chose the second road, on my left. Upon reaching the open space, I saw there were lunch tables cluttered under a roof and some kids sitting around and chatting. It was like a small pavilion. As I walked towards an empty table, thoughts kept racing through my mind.

What will happen here? They don’t know where I am. Oh shoot, why is she looking at me like that? Do I have something weird on me? Is this not dress-code? Not that I cared about that…but, first impressions should be good. What will this school be like? I paused, a thought suddenly dawning on me, what if there is someone here that knows about all this stuff? What if there’s someone that…is working with them?

I shake my head and focus on taking out my trusty MP3 and hooking the earphones up with my ears. After a while, a few other kids came and sat around the nearby tables. I took a deep breath and summoned the courage to actually talk to them. They were all new, too, from different parts of the world. Some I even recognized from orientation. We got along instantly – thank my lucky stars.

I smiled to myself. Nothing weird so far. Everything’s good. Just smile and act normal.

Just then, a black movement caught my eye, causing my breath to halt in my throat. Shadow creature… I turned to the pathway where I had come through and paused. Well… it definitely wasn’t a shadow creature. Arriving at the scene were two boys, around my age, probably a bit older. I let out a sigh of relief. They weren’t other dimensional beings. One was clad all in black with silver chains hanging from his pants and a big, wooden cross dangling from his neck. His pitch black hair contrasted with his very pale skin and under the curtain of hair were two deep, yet icy blue eyes. The other had short hair, brown eyes and wore a leather jacket. I focused my attention on the one with the blue eyes. There was something about him…I couldn’t exactly put my finger on it…

“Who’s he?” I asked the others, desperately looking for some help all of a sudden.

Most people around me stop talking and turn to look at him. The male merely continues walking, aware of the group of eyes staring at him, until he comes up to the tables. The one with brown eyes sat down among a group of other guys.

“Oh, you don’t want to mess with him,” a girl whispered. This was her second year here, apparently. “He’s a punk and his name is -  ”

Even though I didn’t want to, I stopped listening. The boy leaned against a pillar and scanned the horizon. There was something about him…something, intimate? Something…the way his energy felt – it was amplified, that’s a main thing. Maybe he was one of them? Would it be too risky if I talked to him? If he is one of them – chances are he’s something – would he know about me and Blaise?

His ice blue eyes met mine and locked. The world spun faster for a moment. But everything faded in an instant and for that minute, as short as it may have lasted, I felt something…familiar about him. I know it sounds insane, but probably he knew. No, he did know. It was obvious in his eyes. For someone around my age, his eyes seemed to have seen a lot. Far more than they should have. Dizziness took hold of me for a second until he looked away quickly, trying to hide a smirk. I discreetly grabbed the table to steady myself. He was something, I thought excitedly. Now, only to figure out who’s side.
