                                              Chapter 3:

                                                  Alexa

“We have women in the military, but they don’t put us in the front lines. They don’t know if we can fight, if we can kill. I think we can. All the general has to do is walk over to the women and say, ‘You see the enemy over there? They say you look fat in those uniforms.’” –Elayne Boosler

Blaise plopped down on my bed as I sat by her. A week or so had passed since the day we found out that my best friend is a witch. She has taken magic seriously, and every day that passes, I believe her more and more and realize the world is made of magic…unseen magic.

“So, ask a yes or no question!” Blaise’s eyes light up as she takes off her necklace and holds it loosely so it dangles from her fingers. She enchanted her necklace so it answers truthfully to a yes or no question.

“Umm…what will happen today?” I ask not knowing what else to say.

My friend looks at me with an ‘are – you – kidding – me’ look. “I said yes or no…” she reminded me.

“Oh…yeah. Will we be friends forever?” I ask, knowing the answer.

Blaise shakes her head and steadies the dangling necklace, “Ask again.” She says.

I do and suddenly we see the necklace move back and forth as if nodding. I study her hand to see if any muscles are moving, even the tiniest flinch of a muscle would give this up. I scan her fingers, hand and arm…nothing’s moving. The necklace is really moving by itself!

“Whoa!” I gasp in awe. My friend smiles widely at me, proud of herself. “That is awesome!” I say as the necklace stops. She nods.

“Ask again!” she says laughing.

Suddenly, I feel a presence in my room. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up and shivers run up and down my back. Someone’s watching us…and it isn’t a good feeling. I feel someone’s eyes on me as I gulp and look at the necklace.

“Is…someone in my room…besides me and Blaise?” I whisper, barely hearing myself.

The necklace starts moving again, nodding in its own way, back and forth. I swear I could almost feel the color drain from my face as the shivers turn into liquid fire, licking my back. Blaise’s eyes widen as she looks at me.

‘Use your energy to attack!’ my thoughts yell at me.

“C’mon!” I yell at Blaise as we both press our backs against the wall, after having jumped as far back as my bed would allow it. I then close my eyes and gasped at what I saw. A black silhouette with long hair falling up to his shoulders, tight black pants and a dark trench coat, opened at the front, showing off his body, smiled at me. Even with closed eyes, the picture was as clear as day.

“What the heck is that?!” I yell surprised and extending my hands in front of me, wanting to point but not getting to that part and knowing I can’t possibly do anything. Just then I felt something powerful shoot out of my hand, directed at the silhouette. Whatever is coming out of my hand is invisible with open eyes. I close my eyes and see an orange bright light coming out. The figure’s eyes widen as he disappears. I try to stop the light coming out of my hand. I open my eyes and close my hand as it stops. A wave of dizziness washes over me as I waver dangerously. Blaise lays me down against the wall. I feel glad that my cheek is leaning against something cold and solid.

“Alexa! Alexa!” Blaise’s worried voice seeps into my consciousness.

I groan in reply as her hands slap my cheeks lightly. I groan again, not wanting to be dragged away from the wall’s coldness. I open my eyes and see my friend’s worried face looking at me. I feel how worried she is…and trust me, her face looked calm to what she was feeling. Then, there was this other presence – whoever he was – he was still there…out on my balcony, watching us, amused, surprised and a little scared.
