                                                      Chapter 23:

                                                          Alexa

"During the hard training phase never be afraid to take a day off. If your legs are feeling unduly stiff and sore, rest; if you are at all sluggish, rest; in fact, if in doubt, rest." – Bruce Fordyce

“Blaise?” I asked confused as I see her drag her bean bag to the middle of the room, “What are you doing?”

“Wait,” she held up a finger and stood as if she was listening to someone. After a while she looked at her shelf which was full of candles, “Ok, just, be patient a bit more Alexa, and,” she turned as she took a step towards the bookshelf and pointed next to her bed, “can you get that incense holder, please? And there are incense sticks in the drawer of my desk.”

I nodded, still confused and did as I was told. “What’s going on?”

“Sh!” she hissed.

I froze and handed her the incense holder and the sticks.

“Lighter’s over there,” she mumbled as she placed five candles in five positions around the bean bag. I stood still, watching her, unsure of what to do.

Blaise drew an imaginary line connecting the candles so it looked like the pentagram. Then she enclosed the star, candles and beanbag in a circle, placing the incense sticks around it. I immediately shuddered. I had seen in movies that this wasn’t good.

“Relax,” Blaise sighed, “it’s not the devil’s sign.”

I looked around the room to see if I could sense Chris, but perhaps he was somewhere else. I looked at my best friend who was now lighting the candles and incense. She looked like she was really concentrating, almost as if someone else was guiding her.

“Blaise, if-” I start but am immediately cut off with a harsh,

“SH!”

I bite my lip and sit on the bed, watching and hugging a pillow of hers at the same time.  Blaise sat down on the beanbag in the middle of the pentagram, cross-legged and closed her eyes as she brought her hands together, resting them, finger tips connecting with each other and slightly spaced apart right under her chin, listening, concentrating.

Suddenly, she started muttering weird, unknown words and as quickly as she had started, she stopped and shivered. I waited, holding my breath, as I watched Blaise open her eyes. She seemed normal, but there was something, not exactly off, but weird about her.

“What did you do?” I exclaimed out loud.

“Got a Guardian,” she shrugged indifferently as if you could get one any time you wanted.

I gaped at her in shock, “Blaise? How?”

She blinked at me and pointed to the beanbag with the candles around it, “Like that?”

“I don’t mean it like that!”

“Will you two quit fighting?!” a voice that was a bit too feminine to be Blaise’s came out of her mouth.

We both froze. I stared at her in shock. I had mixed feelings. Finally, someone with another Guardian! But on the other hand, why had she just gone off like that and did the ritual without warning me? I let out a soundless sigh and my eyes fall on the five-pointed star drawn from chalk.

“The pentagram,” I start, but am immediately cut off by Blaise.

“was a sign of Pythagoras, the ancient Greek mathematician. He used it at first as his symbol for this secret school of his and then when it got destroyed, the witches and people with powers took it and made it like, a symbol to ward off bad spirits. But never, ever, ever, draw it upside down. Then it becomes the devil’s sign and trust me, bad stuff will happen…very bad.” Blaise concluded. I looked at her with something like shock and awe as I nodded slowly.
