                                                    Chapter 14:

                                                      Alexa

“We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face…we must do that which we think we cannot.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Dead? Dead?! Did he seriously just say that?! I was too mad to care what was going on. And, telling me that I already knew his name? What was that all about? What am I? Some kind of psychic? My mind reeled back to his words: dead, blood on the floor – how much hatred did he harbor for someone who just met us?

I could feel Blaise tense up beside me. Her whole body shivered once – no make it twice. She started emitting bad vibes…was she ok? I scanned the room quickly to see if I had missed something. The man was nowhere to be seen. Maybe he had said something to make her angry? I turned to ask Blaise what had happened but stopped as I saw that she was hunched over. She was looking down, breathing heavily.

“A-Are you ok?” I asked, reaching to put a hand on her shoulder. I quickly retracted it as negative energy poured from her to me.

Kill. Destroy. Those words bounced around in my head. I shook them away, trying to clear my mind. Blaise was what mattered now. And, she didn’t look so good.

My best friend was still breathing heavily, but she was paler now, too. Her eyes were hard and had something in them that wasn’t there before. I wasn’t sure if I should call it… revenge or something else?

“Blaise…?” I ask slowly.

“Blaise isn’t here anymore…” My best friend’s voice came out, tinged with something evil underneath.

I inhaled sharply. This…had got to be a trick! “D-Don’t be silly.” I gulped.

“No one is being silly here, Alexa.” It was him!

“No! What have you done to her!” I scream, my hand already in the air, ready to punch or slap. I never found out what I would have done as Blaise’s hand moved so fast that it caught my wrist in mid-air. I gasped and my eyes went wide. Yeah, this wasn’t Blaise.

“Let her go!” I say as Blaise squeezed my wrist tighter, cutting off the circulation. I sucked in my breath. Blaise’s hand twisted my wrist a bit, sending another shock of pain through me. “Stop!” I could feel my eyes going watery. No, I wouldn’t cry… at least not in front of him…

He didn’t say anything, he just kept staring at me. Blaise’s greenish-brown eyes had were tinged with purple. I closed my eyes in pain as her nails dug into my skin.

Then, as suddenly as he had caught my arm, he let it go, flinging it on the wall. I opened my eyes more in surprise than in pain. Blaise’s eyes were hard as stone and empty. Hollow, empty, purplish eyes. Looking into them made you feel cold. I shivered and averted my gaze, reluctant to move – in reality, not caring if I moved or not – as I mumbled, “Let her go…” Something came over me; my body felt more sluggish.

I felt a shift of energy and saw movement from the corner of my eye. I looked up and saw Blaise’s hand extending slowly at first, then with more confidence, eyes wide open, the purple tint gleaming. I stood frozen, as our eyes locked. I felt as if I was in a dream, a nightmare. I couldn’t move my body. Why was Blaise doing this? I watched as her hand came closer, fingers hungry for whatever it was she wanted to do. The sensation of all this being surreal kept getting stronger and my eyelids started getting heavy. My body swayed dangerously towards the open hand. Any moment now, I’d wake up and Blaise would be Blaise. Her hand wouldn’t be here…inches away.

With a jolt of electricity from Serina, I sat upright and blinked my eyes. Everything was moving so fast. Blaise’s fingertips brushed the skin of my neck and were moving closer, ready to close, when suddenly my hands had a mind of their own. I leaned backwards and slapped her hands away. Blaise’s eyes widened, the strange tint of purple glowing barely noticeable behind the brown of her eyes.

“What the fuck?” she asked, but her voice sounded…more, masculine? The surprise was evident and that sparked something in me. The lethargic feeling was lifted and I immediately felt reenergized.

“Get out of her!” I yelled and kept slapping and pushing her. I wouldn’t dare punch my friend. He put up Blaise’s hands to block his face and leaned as far back as he could, crumpling into the corner. The body jolted and twitched, the discomfort was obvious in my friend’s face. Guess the body was too small for him. I jumped up and kept hitting her arms until finally I hear,

“Ah! Alexa! Alexa, stop! Alexa, it’s me!” The voice was back to normal.

“Oh,” I stop and sit back down, then look at her closely, “You sure?”

She sighed, “Yes.”

“Ok, that’s good.”

“I can’t waste my time talking to little kids like you two…” the man said and left.

“He says that just cause he got beat up by a girl.” I giggle. Blaise looked pretty calm, but her feelings were those of shock and fear.

“Hey,” I put a hand on her arm, “you ok?”

She shrugged it off and nodded. “You?”

I nodded, pulling my hand slowly back and letting it fall to my side, but it somehow ended up on my neck where she had almost strangled me. My fingers crept along my neck, massaging it unconsciously.

“That was really weird.” Blaise noted as we both looked at each other.

“How are you feeling now?”

“Better.”

“How was it like when he…possessed you?” I inquired. Well, what else would you call it?

“I couldn’t control my body. I could see what was happening. I saw my hand stretch out towards your neck and he was talking to me in my head, threatening. I couldn’t get him out of me, it was horrible.”

“I’m sorry,” I said, honestly, feeling wretched all of a sudden.

“It’s not your fault, meatball head!” she rolled her eyes.

Meatball head…of course she’d call me that. I smiled a bit and shook my head, that showed it was her.

“You sure, noodle head?” I nudged her and we both laughed. Well, if I were to be meatball head, our nicknames should at least match! She playfully pushed me and we laughed… until her phone cut us off. I froze and Blaise answered it. Immediately she closed her eyes and held the device away from her ear. Her mother’s voice flooded the space between us…she was in trouble. Then again, what could we have done?
