Chapter 15:
Blaise
“Among the notable things about fire is that it also requires oxygen to burn – exactly like its enemy, life. Thereby are life and flames so often compared.” – Otto Weininger
“Alexa,” I groaned, “we are on a secluded beach. I especially chose this spot for you and you’re not going in?!”
Alexa blushed insanely and played with the hem of her green, cover up dress. The wind started picking up and she dug her feet into the sand, looking around.
“There is no one here.” I pronounced each syllable loud and clear for her to hear. Truly, there wasn’t anyone for a good two miles on either side, maybe more. Not many people like venturing out of the city this much.
“But still…” she looked around one more time. I sighed, rolling my eyes and looked with her. I saw nothing; nothing but a huge expanse of beach for no one but the two of us.
She looked back at me. I did the only thing a best friend would do in a situation like this: marched right on over to her and pulled the zipper down, opening her dress.
“Blaise!” she shrieked, covering her swimsuit-clad body.
“It’s off, now come on!” I started pulling her by the arm.
“Blaise!” she grunted, trying to get away from me. I kept a firm grip and dragged her to the shoreline. “Now, come on.”
She hesitated a bit. I sighed, rolling my eyes and dived in. Did she seriously need to be stranded alone at the beach? Not long after, I heard another splash and surfaced to see Alexa taking a deep breath as she, too, came out of the water.
“Well,” I grinned, “that wasn’t that bad.” I lay down, stretching my hands and legs out so I was floating on the water. I closed my eyes and gently backstroked towards the deepening end, leaving Alexa to follow. She swam at her own leisurely pace.
After a while of friendly competitions and searching for shells, I announced, “I’m tired!”
Alexa laughed and said, “Wanna go out?”
I shook my head, swimming out into the deep, not bothering to stop and see if Alexa was behind me or not. When I swam out as far as I could, I stopped and stretched out my arms and legs, in the starfish resting position. I felt all my muscles relaxing and the water lapped around my body, including my face. It wasn’t bad though, all one had to do was exhale when a wave splashed over them and inhale when the water receded.
“Umm, Blaise?” I heard Alexa’s voice.
“Hmm?” I was careful to not open my mouth.
“I…well, you know how my grandparents…aren’t, uh, around anymore?”
“Mhm…”
“I…talked to them.”
At this, all my senses were on full alert. “Hm?” That wasn’t normal. Other beings such as wizards and witches I could believe, but ghosts?
“My grandpa came and…sat on my bed. I couldn’t see him, but I felt him. I knew he was there,” Alexa spoke slowly, as if trying to recall the details. “He said something about…how we should be careful and…that he and a lot of people were…watching us? Or, watching over us? Something like that,” she said hastily.
“Mm…” I hummed, keeping my eyes closed. He sounded something like a spirit… or it could have just been her imagination; then again, it could have been a spell made to look like someone she knew, thus gaining her trust. So many possibilities… even those that seemed impossible before had a great chance of being real.
