                                                    Chapter 16:

                                                         Alexa

“So, can I go?” I asked my parents hopping up and down, already in my bathing suit and sundress, the flip flops snapping against the floor with each jump. “Pleeeeeeease?”

My mom looked at me, “Did you clean your room?”

I nodded hurriedly thinking of how I shoved everything anywhere I could find the last five minutes and hastily making my bed. “Yeah…it’s clean…”

My dad was fiddling with his keys, “Do you want me to drop you off?”

“No, it’s fine, I can walk.” I smile at them, getting ready to grab my bag, throw on the sunscreen and head off.

“Ok, be careful.” My dad said.

“I will.”

“Take my phone and be sure to call us,” my mom noted, handing me her phone.

I took it and nodded, “I will. Can I go now?”

They both nodded and I ran out the door after grabbing my bag. Walking at a slow, nice pace through the back roads and alleyways, I admired the sky. It was so blue with big, white fluffy clouds being carried on the wind. A warm summer’s breeze blew down the empty street. No one was outside, it was midday and everyone was inside taking naps or enjoying the comfort of the air conditioning systems.

Finally, I got to Blaise’s restaurant. She was waiting outside with a little blonde girl. Her parents were talking to her dad. When Blaise saw me she grinned at me. I smiled back and tuned into her feelings to get into the mood of things. A wave of relief washed over me as I felt something equivalent to the words, “Thank you!”

Demeter’s icy blue gaze settled on me and instantly it sent chills down my back. How could such a sweet nine year old girl have such an evil, vicious glance like that? I tuned into her feelings as soon as our eyes met. Something along the lines of,

“What is she doing here? I didn’t invite her…”

Then, Demeter turned and whispered something to Blaise. Blaise stared at her in what seemed to be like a second’s worth of shock, frowned, but then laughed it off. Demeter did her best to smile at me as her dad waved.

I smiled brightly and waved back. “Hi!” I called out, skipping over to them. I was greeted by a chorus of “Hi” and “Hey” and the occasional “How are you?” I replied to them all and then we got in Blaise’s dad’s car and we rode off towards the dock.

Once there, we all got off. I looked around in awe at all the boats. They were huge with their sails flapping some slow, some maniacally in the wind! Their masts reached the sky.

“Which one’s yours?” I asked.

Demeter’s dad, a tall, balding man that was always wearing a hat and sunglasses, pointed with a slightly chubby finger to a medium-sized boat docked on the edge of a stone pier.

“Alexa!” Blaise called.

I turned to see her hauling a huge grocery bag out of the car. “Here, I’ll help!” I called running towards her and taking the bag out of her hands. It was heavy! “Wh – what do you have in here?” I grunted.

“Me? Oh, well I brought a couple extra stuff, too.”

“Like?” I heaved the bag so I was carrying it with two hands in front of me.
