Chapter 9:
Blaise
“Every human being on this earth is born with a tragedy, and it isn’t original sin. He’s born with the tragedy that he has to grow up. That he has to leave the nest, the security, and go out to do battle. He has to lose everything that is lovely and fight for a new loveliness of his own making, and it’s a tragedy. A lot of people don’t have the courage to do it.” – Helen Hayes
I locked my door as soon as I got to my room and sighed. This was certainly not my day. What the hell was up with that woman? And that shield I had made in Alexa’s home… let’s just say it cost me some energy. I mean, it’s not like I don’t want her to be safe – I do, you know? But, still, it would be nice if she could make shields, too.
I walked to my bed, stripping from my clothes and pulling my pajamas over my head. Plus, what the heck is up with our powers? I’m the offensive one and yet I have the defensive powers! And she’s the defensive, ‘oh-I-don’t-want-to-hurt-anyone-or-anything’ type and yet she has the offensive powers? Is there something wrong here? I definitely think so!
“Blaise, can you open your door?” my mom knocked on the door. I glanced at her direction.
“Fine…” I roll my eyes and unlock it only to be bid goodnight by my parents. When that was over, I closed my door again. Peace and quiet at last.
I sat down in the middle of my bed. “Now, let’s see what else I can do.” I muttered, crossing my legs and making a circle with my fingers. My eyes swept the room and the thought of making a shield passed by my mind. Having nothing else to do, I focused my energy in the empty space between my fingers. I watched as the colorful sparks that left my palms and fingers gradually twisted together again and again until they became steady beams of energy curling around each other, intertwining until they became a compact ball of energy. I poured more energy in and expanded the ball until the whole room was filled with the red, pulsing energy, warming it up. Fire shield. I nodded my approval, pleased with what I’d done.
Something was missing though. Fire, I thought, I could control its energy. What if I could control other elements’ energy, too? Earth looks like a good choice, and it was worth a try. I re-did the process and watched as the green and brown sparks mixed until a soft green, earthy texture dominated the ball of energy. I expanded it until the brown and red melted together, forming a solid black wall that looked suspiciously like – I peered closer, trying to make out what it resembled – was it, lava? The dried-out kind? Cool!
I grinned, leaning back on my bed. Yeah, this would be amazing! The adventure of a life-time with no beginning or end, as Serina had previously said. I could so get used to this!
I lay down on my bed, pulling the covers around me as imaginary scenes of battles played in my mind. Battle, fight, blood, those words felt good on my lips. I smiled at the thoughts and fell into a deep sleep.
Halfway through the night, I find myself in a small, stone room. It was dark, eerie and it resembled something like a dream – awesome! I looked around and saw a woman standing alone. Her face was hidden by a metal mask which wrapped around her head. Her long, black hair fell in waves up to her lower waist, some tendrils clumping and sticking together because of the grease and grime. She wore a long, plain white dress, surprisingly clean. Two bat-like, leathery things behind her back reached towards the ceiling. I looked closer and to my surprise, noticed they were big, black demon wings. Something silver caught my eye. She had chain shackles on her wrists, ankles and a big one across her stomach. Each shackle, including the mask on her head, was embedded with a jewel of different color. She made a move towards me.
