The snow outside falls in lazy spirals, softening the world into something that looks almost too perfect. Fairy lights blink along the edges of the roof, the living room smells faintly of cinnamon and pine, and somewhere in the background an old Christmas playlist hums along.

You never thought you’d actually spend Christmas here, in Niall’s house in Ireland. But somehow it happened. He invited you weeks ago, half-joking, half-serious, and you said yes before your brain had time to remind you how utterly dangerous that was for your heart.

Because you are not just friends. Not to you, anyway. To the rest of the world, maybe – you’re the girl who tags along sometimes, who helps Niall film goofy videos, who teases him like a little sister would. But inside? You know the truth. You’ve been secretly in love with him for longer than you want to admit.
And tonight, sitting cross-legged on the floor while he fumbles with wrapping paper and tape, that feeling is almost too much to handle.

“Don’t laugh at me,” Niall groans, holding up a present that looks more like a crushed pillow than a gift. The red paper is wrinkled, the tape everywhere.
You can’t help it. A giggle escapes your lips, and you shake your head. “This is… impressive. It looks like the gift fought back.”

Niall narrows his eyes, then bursts into laughter too. His laugh is warm, bubbling, and it fills the room until you forget that your chest hurts from loving him in secret.

Minutes later, you both sit by the fireplace. The tree glows, shadows dance on the walls, and Niall hands you a small box.

“Merry Christmas,” he says quietly. His eyes are on you – and for once, he doesn’t look away.

Your hands tremble as you open it. Inside is a silver bracelet, simple but beautiful. A tiny charm dangles from it: a clover.

You swallow. “Niall… it’s beautiful.”
He shrugs like it’s nothing, but his voice is soft when he says, “Just thought… you should have something to remember this Christmas by.”

Your throat tightens. You want to say I’ll never forget it anyway, because of you. But the words stick. Instead you mumble, “Thank you,” and look down, afraid your face betrays too much.
It’s quiet for a while. Just the crackling fire. And then, suddenly, he shifts closer. His knee brushes yours.

“Can I tell you something?” he whispers.
You look up, surprised by the seriousness in his tone. “Of course.”
He takes a deep breath. His blue eyes are nervous but steady on you. “I’ve been going mad these last weeks. Having you around all the time, and pretending it’s just friendship. But it’s not, not for me.”
Your heart stops.

“I can’t keep it secret anymore,” he continues, voice low but certain. “I think about you every day. I… I’m in love with you.”

You blink at him, stunned, the world spinning. For a moment, you forget how to breathe. Then you laugh softly, half in shock, half in relief.

“Niall…” Your voice cracks. “I thought it was just me.”

His eyes widen. “Wait...you...?”

You nod quickly, tears stinging your eyes. “Since forever. I just didn’t want to ruin what we have.”

For a moment, neither of you moves. Then Niall smiles, the softest, most real smile you’ve ever seen, and suddenly his hand finds yours. He leans in, hesitates just long enough for you to nod, and then his lips are on yours.
The kiss is warm, sweet, exactly like him, like cinnamon and laughter and every Christmas dream you ever had.
When you pull back, both of you are grinning like idiots.

“Merry Christmas, love,” he whispers against your lips.

You laugh, wiping at your eyes. “Best Christmas ever.”

And when you curl up against him by the fire, his arm around you, the bracelet glinting softly in the lights, you know: this isn’t just your first Christmas with Niall. It’s the first of many.
