"I have a problem or two... I'll admit that."

"What kinds of problems Alexander?"

"Depends. How would you define a problem?"

"Anything that puts your health or safety at risk."

"Hmmm... yeah, I have a lot of problems then." I smiled. "Problems are exciting, Doc. I kinda like doing things I know I shouldn't do."

"Should I be worried Alexander?"

"No. I have everything under control."

Pristine. I couldn't describe the setting as anything other than pristine as I made my entrance into the large banquet hall. Everything seemed oddly perfect. The high ceiling decorated with glittering lighting fixtures and the hand painted murals that adorned the walls. The color scheme consisted of shimmering golds and reds.

Not to mention the guests. They were even more elaborate than the breathtaking decor that surrounded them. Not that anyone beside myself paid attention to those kinds of details. Everyone else seemed deeply absorbed in their conversations, paying little attention to the time and money spent in the process of creating this room.

Though, I couldn't really blame them for dismissing their surroundings. Growing up and spending so many evenings and dinners in similar rooms I can imagine how monotonous the feeling is.

It all begins to blur and no longer do the colors stand out and the ceilings look so high, but instead it all just fades into something so trivial that its value diminishes to the equivalent of eating the same food every day.

It will no longer be special but instead just another something that you will have to push yourself through for an agonizing amount of hours. And you will fake a smile and you will shake a million hands and it will all be the same. And along with everyone else you will probably wonder if this is what your life is, and the answer will depress you, but you will continue to smile anyways because that is just what you have to do, and you will comfort yourself with something you never needed and it will probably be really shiny and diamond encrusted.

At least, that is how it went for my family.

It's not like I wanted to be here, I couldn't bring myself to care about my family's business, but I had long since stopped trying to get out of these events. It proved futile seeing as my parents were too self-involved to consider my opinions.

It didn't matter though. They decided to make use of me by assigning me the job of greeting all of our guests. Handshake after handshake, I'm almost certain my hand is going numb. And if one more person forgets my name right after I introduce myself I might hit someone. And that someone might be the asshole who stepped on my shoe earlier and didn't apologize.

I busied myself at the snack bar, glancing around at some of the familiar and unfamiliar faces surrounding me. They all seemed to fuse together in my mind until they were all nothing more than a jumble of names and random stories. Maybe it was their urge to conform that prevented me from deciphering who was who, or it could be the lack of attention I put into these events.

Towards the back of the room I saw my older brother stuck mingling with a group of my parents friends. He seemed to be enjoying himself and I found myself wondering how that was possible seeing as these people only knew how to speak dollar signs and investments. What a nerd.

He waved me over and I glared at him shortly, mouthing, 'I hate you' before anyone else could notice and cautiously made my way towards him and the few guests. "Alexander, this is Mr. Rogers..." I let his words travel through one ear and out the other silently hoping my brother will let me leave after the awkward introductions. "and this is..."
