“Why did you do all this? What was the reason?!”
I hadn’t meant to raise my voice, but it rose anyway… not from rage, but from hurt so deep it scraped the edges of my chest.
Hurt that he’d hidden the truth. Hurt that I had to find out this way. Hurt that I was so blind all along.
I should’ve known. From the moment I saw him at my uncle’s party… I felt something.
A familiarity I couldn’t place.
But he never said a word. Not once. As if the truth…was something I didn’t deserve to know. As if I was a part of some plan I never agreed to.
He parted his lips to speak—but then stopped.
Whatever words he’d meant to say were swallowed back down, leaving only silence between us.
“I need you to speak… I need you to tell me everything.” My voice wavered as my eyes blurred again, tears threatening to fall.
His gaze met mine for a fleeting moment…before slipping away. He drew in a slow breath, as if steeling himself against something too heavy to voice.
“I don’t have answers to any of your questions right now…” His voice was low, threaded with guilt.
“I can’t explain everything to you right now,” he said again, this time meeting my eyes with effort like it cost him something to do it.
I stared at him, brows knitting tighter. What did that even mean? What was going on here exactly? Why… did it feel like I had only just scratched the surface so far and there was still a lot… unknown to me?
“Ethan—”
“Please,” he cut in, his voice gentler now, almost pleading. “I promise… I’ll explain everything to you tomorrow.”
I silently stared at him in silence for a couple of seconds and then…believed him. Because I could see it in his eyes—the truth, and the weight of something he wasn’t ready to set down yet.
“Just… one more day?” His voice softened even more, carrying a quiet desperation.
I should have said no. I should have pressed him until the walls broke. But when he looked at me like that—like this was hurting him too—a lot more than I could ever imagine.
And seeing that I couldn’t…I wasn't able to say a no.

—#[the next day: Evening]:[Ava’s pov]:
I entered the living room, dressed in my red gown, only to find Ethan and Noah deep in conversation. Even without hearing their words, I could feel the weight of whatever they were discussing.
Their voices stopped almost the instant they sensed my presence. Both pairs of eyes now shifted in my direction.
Not wanting to make it seem like I’d been eavesdropping, I softened my expression and offered a polite smile as I approached. “What’s going on here?”
They exchanged a quick glance at each other before Noah answered, “Nothing much—just some work-related stuff.”
And just like that…they dismissed the topic. And the room suddenly turned silent
There was definitely something going on. It felt as if it was something…they didn't want me to be a part of.
They brushed it off like some other business talk, and if that was the case then I didn’t wish to pry either, but… they were being unusually secretive, and their expressions were too grave for casual business talk.
