Chapter 17: Job

Taehyung had been the one to bring it up first. He couldn't stand the thought of being dead weight, just eating Jungkook's food, sleeping under his roof, and letting his days pass by without doing anything. He insisted on finding a job-any job-so he wouldn't feel like he was freeloading.

At first, Jungkook flat-out refused. He reminded Taehyung that no one would hire him easily, not after what he had done and the reputation that clung to his name. But Taehyung's persistence was disarming. He wasn't pushy, just earnest, almost childishly stubborn in his determination. In the end, Jungkook found himself giving in-not because he was convinced by Taehyung's logic, but because he found the way Taehyung pouted and pressed on utterly... adorable.

That's how they ended up in Jin's restaurant. Jungkook thought it would be a safe place to start, since Jin was his friend and owned the place. But the second they arrived, Jungkook realized it wasn't going to be that simple.

"This is really strange." Jin folded his arms across his chest, staring between the two of them with narrowed eyes.

Taehyung blinked at him, clearly puzzled by the tension. Jungkook, however, sighed under his breath, already anticipating what was coming.

"Hyung, don't start."

"Don't start?!" Jin's eyes widened, his tone climbing in disbelief. "Are you out of your mind?!"

Taehyung flinched at the sharpness in Jin's voice, and Jungkook immediately stepped in. "Taehyung, why don't you go sit over there for a bit? I'll talk to him." His voice was calm, steady-an anchor against Jin's storm.

Though confused, Taehyung obeyed, moving to an empty table across the room. His presence lingered in Jungkook's periphery, but he focused on Jin, bracing himself.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" Jin hissed the moment Taehyung was out of earshot.

"Hyung," Jungkook began, tone heavy with patience. "I already explained everything to you."

"Oh, I understand everything," Jin retorted, waving his hand dramatically. "I understand that you've apparently decided to take in the same guy who stabbed you, let him live under your roof, and now you want me to give him a job? Jungkook, do you hear yourself?"

Jungkook exhaled slowly, running a hand down his face. "I'm just helping him until he can stand on his own two feet."

"Uh-huh. Just helping," Jin echoed skeptically, leaning in. Then, his voice dropped, laced with playful suspicion. "Or... is it because he's your type?"

Jungkook blinked. "What are you talking about? I'm straight."

Jin smirked, shaking his head. "Straight? Please. How long have we been friends, Jungkook? Do you think I wouldn't notice?"
