Chapter 48: The News

It had taken weeks of legal procedures, countless signatures, and far too many revisits to painful memories—but at last, everything that rightfully belonged to Jungkook was finally back in his hands. The holdings Gaeul had stolen, the accounts she had manipulated, every inch of property she had claimed as her own—they were all restored.

But nothing compared to this.

The Jeon family mansion.

The place he had been fighting for more than half his life.

The place he once thought he would never see again except in dreams and fading memories.

“Wow…” Taehyung’s voice echoed faintly through the high ceilings and marble corridors. “This mansion is so huge.”

His wonder bounced off the walls, filling the hollow silence of the grand foyer—a silence that felt too heavy, too still, as if the house itself had been holding its breath all these years.
Jungkook didn’t answer.

He stood a few steps behind Taehyung, shoulders tense, gaze fixed on the interior in front of him.
It wasn’t the home he remembered.

Not entirely.

The soft brown walls his mother once painted herself were now gone—replaced by the cold, polished gray that Gaeul preferred. The warm wooden floors his father had chosen were swapped out for glossy marble that reflected nothing but emptiness. The quiet corners where his family used to sit together had been reshaped into offices and meeting rooms.

It was unfamiliar.

Wrong.

Uncomfortable.

But even so…

This was where he took his first steps.
Where he had run through the halls laughing.

Where his mother used to sing in the kitchen, and his father would read him bedtime stories on the staircase, because Jungkook always fell asleep there halfway through playtime.
These memories—no one could erase.

Not even Gaeul.

“You must have been spoiled when you were a kid,” Taehyung teased as he wandered around, fingertips brushing the carved wooden banisters like he was testing how real everything was.

Jungkook let out a soft laugh, the sound echoing faintly through the open hallway.

“Well… you’re not wrong about that,” he admitted, shaking his head as if remembering a hundred embarrassing memories at once.

Taehyung turned back to him with a playful squint. “So what are you planning to do with this whole place now? Don’t you think it’s a little too big for one person like you?”
