Chapter 38: Loss

Jungkook didn’t even stop to think. The moment he heard what happened, he ran as if his life depended on it. His heartbeat pounded in his ears louder than anything else, his lungs burning with every step he took through the hospital’s long, sterile corridor. Kyushu followed right behind him, her breath shaky, trying her best to remain composed even though her own heart was racing with dread.

When they reached the reception desk, Kyushu forced herself to speak, though her voice trembled.

“Hi, I—uh, would like to know where Jung Miyeon and Jeon Junghyun are. They were brought here because of a road accident.”

The nurse at the counter typed their names quickly, her expression dimming.
“Ah, yes… they’re both in the operating room right now.”

Kyushu felt a weight drop in her stomach, but she managed to nod.

“Thank you.”

Jungkook didn’t wait for anything else. He broke into a run again, his sneakers squeaking against the floor, his hands shaking uncontrollably. Kyushu hurried after him, her chest tightening at the sight of his trembling shoulders. When they reached the operating wing, the metallic doors swung open—
and a doctor stepped out, removing his gloves, exhaustion written all over his face.

Kyushu immediately rushed forward. “Doctor—are you the one in charge of Jung Miyeon and Jeon Junghyun?”

The man looked at her for a moment before answering quietly, “Yes, I am.”

Something about his tone made her heart drop. There was no relief in it. No hope.

“Uh, I’m Kyushu, one of their house staff, and this—this is their son, Jungkook.” She gestured to the boy standing behind her. Jungkook’s hands were gripping her arm so tightly that his knuckles had turned white. “Please, Doctor… tell us they’re okay. Tell me they made it.”

She tried to sound strong—for him—but her voice cracked. She couldn’t look down at Jungkook because she already knew he was looking up at the doctor, eyes wide with the kind of fear that only children carry when they realize the world might be crueler than they imagined.

The doctor took a slow, heavy breath before speaking. “I’m… I’m sorry.”

Kyushu felt Jungkook’s grip tighten around her arm, the strength of a boy trying to hold onto the last thread of hope.

“We did everything we could,” the doctor continued softly. “We tried to revive both of them, but…” He hesitated, lowering his head. “They didn’t make it.”
