Chapter 24: Argument

When Taehyung finally stepped out of the towering glass doors of the company, he released a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. The world outside felt brighter, as though even the sunlight had a bite to it. But whatever relief he thought he’d feel vanished instantly when his eyes landed on a familiar figure.

There, leaning casually against a sleek black car, was Jungkook. One hand buried deep in his pocket, the other holding a lit cigarette, smoke curling lazily upward into the air. His posture was relaxed, but his expression wasn’t—it was unreadable, his gaze fixed on Taehyung with a heaviness that made the Taehyung's heart stumble in his chest.

The moment Jungkook noticed him, he flicked the cigarette away, grinding the ember under his shoe until nothing but a thin trail of ash remained. Without a word, he moved to the passenger side and pulled the door open, the gesture was commanding rather than courteous.

“Get inside,” he ordered, voice flat, offering no room for debate.

Taehyung froze on the steps, his feet glued to the pavement. His instincts screamed at him not to obey, a gnawing sense of dread wrapping itself around his ribs like a vice. Something about the way Jungkook stood there—the hard line of his jaw, the cold gleam in his eyes—made the surrounding feel dangerous. If he got in that car, he wasn’t sure what would happen.

Jungkook’s eyes narrowed at his hesitation. “What are you standing there for?” His tone dropped lower, firmer enough to slice through Taehyung’s nerves. “I told you to get inside.”

The sudden sternness made Taehyung flinch. He bit his lip, searching frantically for an excuse, any excuse, to get out of this. “I—I can go to Jin’s restaurant alone,” he stammered, his voice thin and shaky. “You don’t have to—”

But Jungkook cut him off before he could finish. “Who said you’re going there?” His words were clipped with implication.

Taehyung’s chest tightened. His fingers curled into fists at his sides as he tried to summon courage, though his voice betrayed the tremor of fear inside him. “I have work,” he blurted, the words tumbling out too quickly. “I don’t think it’s a good idea to take a day off when I’m just a newbie. Jin might—” He stopped, realizing he was rambling nonsense, but he was too nervous to stop. Anything felt better than silence under Jungkook’s gaze.

“Don’t you hear me, Kim Taehyung?!” Jungkook’s sudden outburst crashed through his words like thunder. His glare was fierce, unrelenting, and his voice carried far enough to draw the attention of pedestrians passing by. Conversations faltered. A few people slowed their steps, stealing curious glances in their direction.

Jungkook took a step forward, his presence looming, his voice dropping lower, laced with threat. “Or do you want me to pull you in and fucking force you to get in?!”
