Chapter 42: Interrogated

Taehyung stopped by the police station once more that afternoon, the faint hum of the city outside fading as he stepped through the glass doors. The air inside was sterile and heavy with tension, filled with the scent of paper, metal, and stale coffee.

“It’s you again,” Officer Minyeol said with a faint smile, recognizing him immediately.

“Oh, I just wanted to ask about the USB and the brown envelope I reported missing last time,” Taehyung explained, his tone polite but curious. “Did you happen to find them?”

Minyeol’s expression shifted, guilt flickering in his eyes. “Unfortunately… no. We searched the area again, but there was nothing. I was supposed to contact you, but I didn’t want to disappoint you with bad news.”

Taehyung’s lips curved into a faint smile, even though a sigh pressed against his chest. “It’s fine. I wasn’t really expecting much, but… I thought there might be a chance.”

“I’m really sorry,” Minyeol said again, scratching the back of his neck.

“No, please—don’t apologize. It wasn’t your fault.” Taehyung gave a soft chuckle, the kind that felt tired but kind. “I’ll manage.”

Minyeol nodded, visibly relieved. “If you ever need anything else, Mr. Kim, just let me know. I’ll help you however I can.”

Taehyung gave a small bow before leaving the station. The late afternoon sunlight hit his face as he stepped outside, golden rays spilling over his soft features. The disappointment lingered in his chest, but he pushed it down, deciding to head straight to work instead of dwelling on it. After all, Jungkook said they would go on a date soon.

As he walked down the street, his phone buzzed in his pocket. The screen lit up with “Jungkook 💜”, and despite himself, Taehyung smiled. He swiped to answer.

“Hey,” Jungkook’s voice came through, low and warm — that tone that always made Taehyung’s stomach twist in the softest way.

“You sound busy,” Taehyung teased lightly. “Shouldn’t you be drowning in meetings right now, Mr. CEO?”

“I canceled one,” Jungkook replied smoothly. “I wanted to hear your voice instead.”

Taehyung’s steps slowed. “You did what?”

“Don’t act surprised,” Jungkook said, his voice carrying that familiar smirk. “I needed something to recharge me. Guess what that is?”

“Coffee?” Taehyung replied dryly, but his lips curved into a shy grin.

“Wrong,” Jungkook whispered, and even through the phone, his tone dripped with affection. “It’s you.”

Taehyung rolled his eyes, though his heart fluttered wildly. “You really shouldn’t skip your meetings just to say that.”
