By the next day, the news spread. It wasn't even two months, and Aoi's name was again trending. Television screens flashed with images of Aoi's face. The air around the city looked gloomy.
Miyako and Aqua were seen in the office. Aqua was reading a script while Miyako was working on her laptop. The television was running in the background, reporting the news.
"Actor Aoi Kurokawa was found unconscious last night on the Bridge after being stabbed near his abdomen...He's said to be in a state of coma after suffering immense blood loss."
There was a moment of silence. Miyako's fingers froze over the keys. Aqua's face didn't change, but his eyes widened, his posture stiffened. Then a sharp noise of something breaking hits their ears. On the floor near the hallway entrance lay Ruby's favorite cup, broken clean across the middle. Fragments were scattered across the wooden flooring.
Ruby stood frozen where she was, her hands trembling. Her wide eyes were fixed on the TV screen, disbelief painted across her face.
Miyako- Ruby...?
Ruby didn't respond. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. Aqua rose slowly from the couch, his gaze steady on her.
Aqua- Ruby-
She took a small step back, shaking her head. Her breathing was uneven.
Ruby- No...no
Her voice cracked before she could finish. The tears came quickly, but before they could see, she quickly turned away and ran upstairs to her room. Ruby slammed the door behind her and stumbled inside.
She pressed her palms to her ears as if she could shut it all out, but her thoughts wouldn't stop. They kept looping back to that day.
"Just die already-"
Ruby- I didn't mean it...
She went to her drawer, pulling out the beads and the torn bracelet base she had yanked off that day. She remembered the day she had given it to him.
"Promise you'll look after yourself."
Ruby collapsed onto her bed, clutching the broken bracelet to her chest.
Ruby- Why does it hurt this much...?
Her voice was barely audible.
Ruby- I'm acting like...like he's Kai...
She stared at the ceiling. She had died at twelve. And Kai...he had lived three more years. Only to die from a stabbing.
Ruby- Just like Aoi..I didn't even see Kai die...But I know how he died
The day she was reborn as Ruby, Kai had been stabbed. Just like Aoi.
Ruby- I always thought...maybe Kai was reborn too.
She blinked slowly, her eyes glazed with tears.
Ruby- And I thought...maybe it was Aoi
It sounded ridiculous out loud, but it was a feeling she couldn't shake. Aoi had always felt familiar. Not in the way Kai had smiled, but in the way he had seen her. Even when he was distant, she closed her eyes, remembering the way Kai used to speak. Aoi, on the other hand, had grown sharp.
Ruby- Aoi isn't like that all the time...he's just...guarded. But even if he's all guarded...the way he always looks at me...those same softness in his eyes...
She sat up slowly, her fingers brushing the beads in her palm.
Ruby- That's why I thought...maybe he is Kai
