Chapter 55
It was late, and the large dining room felt cozy now that it was just the two of them. Arjun and Kavya were finishing a quiet, late dinner of leftover light appetizers.
Kavya set down her fork, her expression relaxed and deeply content. She reached across the table and placed her hand over Arjun's.
"Thank you, Arjun," she said simply, her eyes meeting his. "That was... exactly what I needed. I didn't even realize how much the fear had built up until I saw their faces."
Arjun smiled, squeezing her hand. "The aunties? They were thrilled to see you, trust me. They've been wanting to meet the woman who tamed the great Arjun karmarkar and brought the company back to life."
"No, not just that," Kavya insisted, shaking her head gently. "It was the stories. When Sara -Masi talked about her thirty-six hours of labor, and Lata-Mami confessed she cried for a week afterward because she thought she wouldn't be a good mother... it just made the fear feel normal. They all said the same thing: it's brutal, but we survive it. And we get the greatest reward."
She leaned back, the last traces of her night-time panic completely erased. "Hearing those powerful, accomplished women talk about being terrified... it made me feel strong again. You brought me the best kind of medicine."
Arjun didn't say anything, but the deep, quiet satisfaction in his eyes spoke volumes. He had watched them all evening, observing as the older women shared their truths, seeing the color and life return to Kavya’s face. He knew his logic and reassurance hadn't worked, but the shared experience of motherhood had.
He picked up a small piece of mango from his plate, a familiar, affectionate gesture. "Well, I figured since they've already survived it, they're the best-qualified consultants in the world. And they all promised me you'd be bossing me around again by morning."
Kavya laughed, accepting the mango from his fingers. "Of course. Someone has to keep the CEO humble." She looked at him, her eyes shining with certainty and love. "Thank you for thinking of that. You really are the best husband."
Arjun’s smile was genuine and soft. He reached across the table and gently traced the line of her jaw. "And you, my love, are the best thing that ever happened to me. Now finish your food. We need fuel for whatever happens next."
The storm of fear has passed, and Kavya feels emotionally secure.
Arjun neatly stacked his dinner plate and Kavya's, rising from the table with a contented sigh. He was just starting to gather the silverware when his phone began to ring—a bright, insistent sound that shattered the peace of the late hour.
He glanced at the screen, and his face instantly tightened with an expression of weary irritation. "Speak of the devil," he muttered, quickly answering the call. "Akash, I told you I'd call you back tomorrow."
He moved toward the kitchen counter, separating the plates. Kavya, settling back at the table with a satisfied expression, watched him, curious about the immediate shift in his mood.
"No, I can't talk right now, I'm cleaning up dinner," Arjun said into the phone, his voice already strained. He ran the tap to rinse a fork, turning his back slightly to Kavya.
Kavya leaned forward, intrigued. "Who is it?" she whispered, though he couldn't hear her over the running water.
Arjun lowered his voice slightly, but his irritation made it sharp. "It's Akash. He's obsessed with this bachelor trip."
He put the phone on speaker, holding it between his shoulder and ear as he loaded the dishwasher.
"Listen, man, you are making a huge mistake!" Akash's booming voice filled the quiet kitchen. "Amsterdam, Ibiza, Prague! Two weeks of pure, unadulterated freedom before the ball and chain officially drops! You have to come, Arjun! The boys are waiting!"
