A Complicated Heart

The Verdict

The courtroom was deathly quiet as Lindsey awaited the results as to whether he would lose his children, Stevie had of course gone with him for support and was currently sitting with Lindsey's three children, they had been called for a private talk with the judge about what, only they knew

"And why Mrs Buckingham do you think that Ms Nicks is not a suitable person for your children to be around?" The judge asked Lindsey's soon to be ex wife

"Because she was a coke addict and everyone knows it!"

"Ms Nicks..." The judge shocked the court by seeking Stevie out in the front

"Yes your honour?"

"When was the last time that you were under the influence of cocaine?"

"1986 your honour"

"Thank you!" He turned back to Kristen now

"Ms Nicks has not touched the drug since 1986, there for the argument that she is not a suitable person for your children to be involved with is totally invalid, any other reasons?"

"No your honour" Kristen knew this wasn't going well for her

"Did you or did you not take off and leave your children alone?" Kristen nodded shamefully

"I need a spoken answer Mrs Buckingham"

"Yes"

"Do you think doing that is going to make this all look good on your part?"

"No your honour"

"You may return to your seat"

The trial had already been going on for an hour and a half and the judge was about to give his final verdict

"I had a private and legal talk with the three children in question here, and asked them who they would prefer to live with on a permanent basis, so with that and the questioning that has been brought forward today, I award sole custody to Mr Buckingham, case dismissed" the judge got up and left the court room leaving a shocked Lindsey, he was never expecting to get the children full time

"Oh my god" was all he could say as his three children and very pregnant girlfriend approached him

"You did it baby, we have the children!" Stevie said and huddled the kids in for a big joint hug with Lindsey

"No we did it! We've given them enough of a home that they chose us!" They shared a kiss and Lindsey looked around for Kristen, she was nowhere to be seen and had vanished as soon as the verdict came out, she had already signed the divorce papers a month ago and he would soon be a free man

They left the court house and walked happily to their car, all of them smiling the whole way, Stevie was just about to open her door when she doubled over

"Mom what's wrong?" Will asked causing Lindsey to look over

"Steph what is it?"

"I think I need the hospital!" Her eyes went wide

"What? Why? What's wrong?" Lindsey asked concerned

"My waters just broke!"

Half and hour later they were at the hospital and Stevie was pushing for her life

"Come on mommy you can do this!" Stella said as she squeezed Stevie's hand

"I can see the head!" Lindsey said from the end of the bed

"I can't push anymore, I'm too tired!" Stevie said irritably

"You have to baby, you need to get our child out of there, don't you want to say hello? Come on Steph! Just a few more!" He encouraged her, the nurse said pretty much the same thing as Lindsey when Stevie looked at her

"One more big one now Stephanie!" The nurse told her, she looked straight into Lindsey's eyes and gave one final big push, until she heard the cries of a baby, due to the drugs she joined in with the crying

"You did it. You have a healthy baby girl!" Lindsey smiled brightly, this was the very first time he knew they were having a girl, Lindsey cut the cord and wrapped the baby in a blanket and handed her to Stevie, who was still crying

"Hello there sweet girl" the baby stared up at her mother with her fathers eyes

"She's gorgeous just like her mother!" Will said as he stroked his sisters cheek, his words causing Stevie to cry some more

They all sat around Stevie and the baby, touching, kissing and holding the new addition to the family

"Any ideas on a name?" The nurse came in and asked

"Been as you missed out on so much, I'd like you to name her Linds!" This brought a tear to Lindsey's eye, after a minuet of pondering her gave an answer

"She's called Skye"

"Linds that's beautiful!" Stevie told him and he smiled, glad that the name he chose was alright

"Stevie?" Lindsey said after another couple of minuets

"Mmm?"

"Been as your mother to these three monkeys and this precious one here, would you do me the honour of becoming my wife?" Lindsey pulled a small box out of his pocket, no matter the outcome of today he was going to ask this evening

"Oh my god yes! Absolutely!" Stevie looked at the ring and then watched as Lindsey placed it on her finger

That day was magical, Lindsey and Stevie finally got everything that they wanted all those years ago, it took a long time and many a heartbreak but they made it, and they had the love and support of their children, the ones Stevie gained and the one they shared together, good things come to those who wait
