A Complicated Heart

One Last Favour

They drove the rest of the journey in silence, they wouldn't have this discussion with the kids in ear shot

Once they reached the house they bid each child goodnight and once they gave them chance to fall asleep Stevie and Lindsey went into the living room to discuss this situation that had just happened

"What exactly did you mean?" Lindsey asked first

"If your with me there's no way they will let you have your children"

"So what? you just go out of my life and pretend that all of this with us never happened?" Lindsey was irritated that Stevie would ever suggest such a thing

"I'm not saying forget this happened but i am saying that you can't be with me in a relationship" this was killing her to say

"Stevie your pregnant with my child!" He told her as if she had forgotten this fact

"Don't you think I know that? Lindsey this is hurting me so much to ask you but I need to, I won't let you lose your children" she cried

"Your taking away my child Steph, that is making me lose one"

"Linds please understand, your wife can and will do everything in her power to make sure that if you stay with me then you won't ever get to see your babies again..."

"But our baby..." Lindsey interrupted

"Will still know exactly who you are, and you can still see me when the baby is born, I won't stop you from being a part of their life...we just can't live that life together, do you get that?" She took his hands, and watched him nod

"I have two months left, I think it best if we don't see each other"

"Wait, I can be there for the birth right?" He asked worried

"Do you think she will let you?"

"I don't give a shit whether she lets me, I will not miss this Stevie!" He pulled her into a hug and they both cried for them, and for the children involved, after a short time Lindsey spoke up again

"Can I ask a question?"

"Sure"

"Why did you make me leave you for her in the very beginning"

"Because..." Stevie began to cry again remembering "I wanted you to have the family that I couldn't give you, you always wanted a family more than anything Linds" Lindsey now cried at the words

"I always wanted a family with you Stevie, I didn't want it with anyone else, couldn't you see that?"

"I just wanted you to be happy" she fell into his chest

"I know baby, I know"

A few hours later Stevie decided it was time to leave Lindsey's, she couldn't see straight anymore from the tears that were fogging her eyes, Lindsey had called a car and gave instructions to send her safely back to her own house

"I don't know if I can let you go" Lindsey said as he stood at his door with her

"I don't want you too, I really don't, but you have to, think of your kids" she placed her hand on his cheek

"I am" he got down on his knees and nuzzled his face into Stevie's belly "look after my kid Nicks" Stevie ruffled his curls

"You can count on it Buckingham" Lindsey got up at looked into Stevie's eyes as though he was going to forget what they looked like

"Do me one last favour?" Stevie nodded once more

"When you go, don't look back okay? Walk down that drive and look straight a head because if you look at me, I won't ever be okay with you going, I can't watch my life look at me whilst it's disappearing" Lindsey's tears were mixing with Stevie's, she didn't answer him, simply taking his hand and resting it on their baby, and kissing him with all she had

"I love you!" She told him

"I love you too! So much!"

Lindsey watched that night as she walked away, she had listened to him and didn't look back once, even though he knew for her it would be the hardest thing she had ever done, and he understood because letting her walk away was the same for him, he thought he understood why she did and said what she had, but watching the car tail lights vanish into the dark he realised that he didn't understand at all, the only thing that was clear right now was the fact that his heart physically hurt and he swore that he just felt it shatter...he had just broken...
