A week later and Stevie had been released from the hospital and was now settling her stuff in back at Lindsey’s house; he didn’t want to leave her at her own house by herself so he brought some of her personal belongings to his

“Steph?” Lindsey said as he knocked on his own bedroom door

“Yeah?”

Lindsey walked into the room and stood leaning against the door frame before he spoke to her

“I need to pick the kids up from school in about half an hour, want to come with me? They would love to see you!” he asked hoping he could get her out for some air for a while

“No I’m okay thanks, I’m just going to stay here and have a bath or something, I really need one after the hospital” she answered without looking at him

“Stevie look at me please?” he asked and she still didn’t

“Stevie?” he tried again

“Lindsey can you please just leave me alone for awhile please?” she snapped and he left the room without another word

Lindsey picked up all the kids from school and made his way back home, the girls were chatting amongst themselves and Will was in the front seat not saying a word

“Will, buddy, you okay?” Lindsey asked his oldest child

“Yeah I’m okay, I just want to get home, it will be really nice to see Stevie” Will told his father, Lindsey loved the fact that all his kids loved Stevie to pieces

They went back to silence when all of a sudden, Stella shouted out

“Dad Stop the car over there!” she kept repeating until Lindsey pulled into a parking space in front of a line of shops

They had parked in front of the exact shop that Stella wanted; she leant through the middle of the car and pointed to the shop window

“We have to get that for Stevie!” she said getting out the car and Lindsey followed her

They walked up to the window and Lindsey saw what she was pointing at, on the mannequin in the window was a shawl in the most beautiful powder pink, it had a fringe around the edging and was covered in tiny little multicoloured roses

“What you want to get it?” Lindsey asked his daughter

“Yeah, she’s just come out of hospital she needs cheering up somehow right?” Lindsey smiled at Stella’s thought

“Sure lets go and get it then shall we?” He said but Stella was already half way through the door

A short while later they were arriving back home and everyone piled out the car and into the house

Inside the kids went to their room to do their homework and Stella wanted to wrap Stevie’s shawl in some paper she had found and had to have in the shop

Stevie had finally joined them for dinner after quick hellos to the kids and they had all sat down and eaten in pretty much silence, after all the dishes had been done everyone congregated into the other room and Stella ran upstairs and brought her package down

She walked over to Stevie hand handed her the present she had wrapped and made a pretty bow on

Stevie opened it and tears came to her eyes as she picked up the shawl and ran her fingers over it

“I thought been as your most likely going to be our mom now, I wanted to get you something to cheer you up!” Stella told her and Lindsey watched as something in Stevie suddenly snapped at Stella’s words

Stevie threw the shawl down roughly and stood up and looked down at Stella

“No, I’m not going to be your mother! I don’t want someone else’s kids, I want my own, now take the stupid thing back because I don’t want it!” Stevie was shouting and Lindsey stood opened mouthed as he watched Stevie storm out of the room leaving Stella in tears

“Baby, she didn’t mean that!” Lindsey wrapped his arms around his daughter

“Will look after your sisters for a minute yeah?” he asked and Will nodded in reply

Lindsey ran up the stairs after Stevie and opened the door to his bedroom where Stevie suddenly whipped round

“Leave me alo...” Stevie couldn’t finish before Lindsey interrupted loudly

“DON’T YOU EVER SPEAK TO ANY OF MY CHILDREN LIKE THAT AGAIN DO YOU HEAR ME?” Stevie was shocked at how booming Lindsey’s voice was

“I didn’t...” again he interrupted

“Who do you think you are doing that Stevie?” He asked the rhetorical question and continued “She saw that on the way back from school, and she said you had to have it! She came straight home to wrap it up for you!”

Stevie couldn’t answer him

“Her mother took off last week, leaving them alone for a while, she’s always seen you as a second mother and you told her you didn’t want her! How heartless can you be?” Stevie finally spoke after this

“Lindsey you need to understand I just lost my child and this is too soon to have kids around”

“I LOST A CHILD TO STEVIE, THAT WAS MY BABY YOU WERE CARRYING, SO DON’T YOU DARE SAY I DON’T UNDERSTAND” he shouted louder than before now

Stevie couldn’t say anything else because Lindsey and walked out of the room slamming the door loudly behind him

Only now did Stevie know what she had done
