"I... I know you."
Yuuta finally speaks. He seems to keep his tone under control, but we can both see him. The way he grips the sheets, the way terror stirs in his eyes.
I silently spectate.
"Well yes... a couple times actually." Kakeru passes me a glance as though I could offer him help or comfort. I look at him quizzically, wondering just how this will all play out.
"Like Y/N said... should we be finding you a nurse?" He asks, but Yuuta doesn't budge. His eyes remain burrowing, nearly creeping past his visitor's facade.
"No, I mean.., recently? I feel like... I've seen you before... At the train station." Yuuta soon relaxes, shoulders lowering. I stare, feeling helpless to their spiel.
What is he saying? Why would he see Kakeru there? And if he was there; why didn't he help? Many questions causes my mind to haze and my lips to gape.
Kakeru pauses. Tension surrounds us and causes us to sit still. Any movement could snap it in half; not that I'm complaining.
"You... must be joking?" He follows up with. He doesn't stutter, nor does he clear his throat or panic— he doesn't give me any reason to doubt him... but I would never doubt a policeman's instincts either.
In fact... Yuuta's gut feeling has always been correct. I can never tell him I told you so.
I don't know when, but my eyes grew wide. I'm shocked, but something tells me... something tells me that Yuuta is on to something.
"What... Yuuta I don't understand." I add. I look to Kakeru, who holds an indifferent expression. My eyes soften, but they don't lose its
"I swear... I swear it Y/N, I—"
"This is getting a bit out of hand. I'll go look for a doctor." Kakeru stands. The rigid sound of the stool snaps the tension in half. We both watch speechlessly as he stands.
For a moment... I believed Yuuta. I've never seen this state of him before... but; could it be that he is in shock. So as I try to ease the pounding of my heart by inhaling, Kakeru is already headed past the door.
click.
"...Please, Y/N. I think I saw that guy at the station..." Yuuta tosses up this hands, rotating them around his head in a bizarre manner. "Wearing some kind of mask, facial-cover thing..."
I remain silent for a moment— thinking that there is no way that could be possible... but the dryness in my throat suggests otherwise.
"But that doesn't make any sense... haha, Kakeru would have no motif to do that... And let's say that he was there, how do you know that it was him if he has his face covered?"
I try to justify. Things would just get far too complicated if there was any other answer... That has to be the answer.
I've been pushing it further and further into the back of my mind these days... but from certain angles, Kakeru looks a lot like Sugawara. I don't want every man I meet to be an ill-fated replica of the man I once loved.
"I get it... but for a moment his eyes... his eyes reminded me. They even have the same build." You don't have to believe me, Y/N... but when have I ever lied to you? ...Besides about accidentally shrinking your clothes...?"
