Chapter Eleven

We're the new face of failure

Prettier and younger but not any better off

"Da?" E.J. whined, looking around the front room as if Oliver was going to walk through the front door at any minute. Oliver had left early this morning and had yet to come back. E.J. was all dressed and ready to go to bed, but like most nights he refused to sleep until Oliver sang him a lullaby. It had only become a recent thing, ever since we'd joined Olly on tour. Oliver usually did it to bond with E.J., which I was more than fine with. I often struggled getting Elijah to sleep, and if Oliver wanted to take that over I didn't mind.

"Daddy isn't back yet baby." I whispered, kissing the top of his head before sighing softly. It was way past E.J.'s bedtime, the clock on the mantle reading just past eleven. I didn't want to be dealing with a grumpy baby tomorrow, but E.J. was absolutely refusing to go to bed.

"Da." E.J. whined again, resting his head against my chest. I rubbed his back softly, looking at the door myself in hopes that Oliver really would just walk through that door. I was beyond worried, especially because he hadn't answered any of my calls or texts

"Is that the only word he knows?" Jonah asks and I looked over at my brother who was sitting on the couch. I laughed softly before nodding.

"Yeah, pretty much. He's only seven months old Jo, he's not going to know a ton of words." I pointed out.

"Well he should at least know Jo." Jonah complains, shaking his head a little as he lays down. I just shrug, even though he couldn't see me.

"If he starts saying your name before mine, I'm a terrible parent." Jonah laughed at that, his laugh making E.J.'s grumpy look slowly fade into a small smile. E.J. looked over at Jonah, making grabby hands at him.

"Da." E.J. said, making me laugh a little.

"That's not your dad you silly goose." I cooed, kissing the side of his head.

"Does Oliver ever walk into the house and say "Daddy's home" I feel like that's something he would do." Jonah randomly said, nearly making me choke. I looked at him with a surprised expression, a little taken aback by what my brother had just said.

"I can honestly say that he's never done that..." I said after a minute, clearing my throat a little before turning my attention back to E.J. He wasn't as grumpy anymore, which was a good thing but I knew that he was going to need to sleep eventually... and by the looks of it, Oliver wasn't going to be back anytime soon. At the rate we were going, he probably wasn't going to be home until tomorrow morning.

"Do you think Dad ever did that?" Jonah asks, his voice holding a tired tone to it.

"I wouldn't put it past him." I whispered, noticing that E.J. was starting to close his eyes. If I was lucky, he was going to sleep.

"I bet he did, hell I bet he still does."

"Probably... I'll be right back, I'm gonna see if I can get Eli to go to sleep." I said quietly, standing up off the floor. Jonah let out a sigh before nodding.

"Alright, hopefully I'll survive." I just rolled my eyes before walking to Oliver and I's room. We had a small crib set up for E.J., but lately we'd just let him sleep in the same bed as us. He liked the company, but I knew eventually we would have to move him back to the crib. E.J. gripped at my t-shirt as I started to put him down, letting out a whine and his face started to crumble.

"I'm sorry baby, but you need to sleep. If you don't sleep, you'll be grumpy." I said quietly, gently detaching his hands from my shirt. E.J. started to cry, looking at me in complete dismay as I pulled away.

"I know... Your daddy always sings to you... I know." I whispered, looking around the room desperately for Oliver's guitar. It had been quite some time since I'd played it, but I was sure I could remember something. I found Oliver's guitar sitting against the wall on the other side of the bed. I grabbed it quickly before sitting down on the edge of the bed. I strummed the guitar softly, smiling softly as E.J. stopped crying.

"Tonight I've fallen and I can't get up, I need your loving hands to come and pick me up. And every night I miss you, I can just look up, and know the stars are holding you, holding you, holding you... Tonight..." I sang quietly, smiling as E.J. slowly but surely falls asleep. We didn't really have much of a lullaby for him, but Oliver would often sing to him the song he'd written about us... I kissed the top of E.J.'s head before putting Oliver's guitar back where I found it. I closed the door behind me as I headed back to the living room. I shook my head a little when I saw that Jonah was asleep on the couch, a somewhat fond expression finding its way onto my face. I grabbed a blanket for him from the closet before laying it over the top of him. I glanced at the clock, sighing softly as I realized how late it really was.

And Oliver still wasn't back.
