"Catarina, can you read the next paragraph for me please?" Asked my teacher, who we apparently just called, Mme.
"Uh, yeah sure." I smiled sweetly at her.
I lowered my head and began reciting the paragraph. It was all a bunch of gibberish to me since I didn't remember anything about this unit, but I guess I'll just have to catch up.
"Thank you Catarina." Mme answered as I finished reading the paragraph.
I noticed that Macy had her head down throughout the whole story so far, so I gave her a skeptical look when she glanced my way. She slightly shook her head indicating that she wasn't in the mood to talk about it right now.
"Okay, so now, how about," Mme. paused, and scanned the room. "Macy" she finished. I looked up at Macy only to see colour drain from her face. She took in a sharp breath.
"Umm, Mme, could someone else go instead? I don't really think it's a good idea to-" Macy's pleading was cut off by Mme.
"Oh don't be silly! It's only a small paragraph, Macy. Go ahead." Mme spoke to her encouragingly.
"O-Okay," Macy stuttered. I don't know what she's so worried about. But I saw her close her eyes and take a deep breath. "When Ebbie's b-breath accured, Aliver w-was... saa- so, upset, t-that, he," Macy stopped abruptly. She had tears welled up in her eyes. "I can't do this!" She screamed as she pushed her chair back and ran out into the classroom.
"Macy wait!" Ryan called as he got up and ran to follow after her. Since he was so tall, he had long strides, and would probably catch her within a couple seconds.
The immature part of our class erupted into a huge "Ooooooooooooooh" sound. Whilst others looked confused and a little shocked. I knew I was.
"Ryan-" Mme. yelled as Ryan darted out of the door. "Well, that's useless." She muttered. "Umm... let's see." Mme started looking around the class. "Ahh, Catarina, would you mind, scurrying into the hall to check on Macy?"
"Okay." I answered. Then I ran into the hall chasing after the two of them. I felt bad for Macy, she looked so upset. Of course I wanted to make sure she was okay, but also cure my curiosity as to what just happened.
I stopped before I took the turn into the next hallway. I could hear Ryan trying to soothe Macy as she cried. I stuck my head around the corner, to see Ryan hugging Macy. She lent on his shoulder in the middle of the hallway while tears ran down her face.
Even while crying, Macy looked beautiful, like always. Maybe that was why Ryan liked Macy.
Then of course, Ryan looked as great as he always did. How they got together still beats me. I had no clue how their relationship started. Maybe Macy suddenly fell for his good looks. And by the looks of things, his charm wasn't too bad either because Macy gradually began calming down.
I didn't want to interrupt them, but I also didn't want to miss anymore of the lesson. So I brought the attention onto myself when I cleared my throat.
"Uhhmm, hey guys," Their eyes snapped up to meet mine and they looked at me sheepishly. "We kinda need to go back to class..." Then Ryan looked at me with a cold glare. What's up with that dirty look?
Oh, right. Kataniss and Kathy said he was mad at me for... something to do with Adam I think.
"Sure, whatever Catarina. Are you sure you're okay Macy?" He asked concerned.
"Yeah, I think I'm alright to go back now," Macy answered quietly, drying her eyes with the back of her sleeve. Then she dropped all eye contact to look down at the floor. "I-I just have to tell you guys something. I am-" Macy didn't get to finish her sentence because Mme. poked her head around the corner.
"Okay guys, please come back into the classroom. I don't want to have you miss any more class time. How are you Macy?"
"Good enough." Macy smiled sadly as she answered solemnly. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught another tear stream down her face.
We walked the short distance back to class. I followed Mme, and felt Ryan's burning glare on my back as he trailed behind us with Macy. I guess we would have to wait until later to find out about Macy's secret. Maybe this is what the other two girls were talking about.
What have I gotten myself into?
