The next day came and, despite Elijah's protests, Lyn decided to go over and talk to Klaus herself. She sighed as she pulled her car to stop in front of the mansion and looked out at it. As fun as it would have been to procrastinate this, she knew that her intervention would be necessary sooner or later.
As soon as she pushed the door open, Lyn knew that Klaus was probably brooding in his art. So, her footsteps quiet yet entirely audible to an original vampire, entered the drawing room and found Nik exactly where she had suspected.
He didn't turn around but he knew she was there. "If you're here to try and excuse the actions of your beloved, don't bother,"
His voice was light but the tension that strung through it was not, "I'm not excusing what he did. That would be idiotic of me and, quite frankly, I don't think what he did was okay, either."
Klaus turned and Lyn held her ground, keeping her arms crossed and posture firm. "Then why are you here, Lyn? What motivation could you possibly have for coming here when I could just as easily compel you to leave my brother as he did Aurora,"
"Okay, one," Lyn began. "I'm on vervain. And, two, that move would be more see-through than glass," Klaus continued to stare at the sharp look Lyn was staring at him with and she took great pleasure in seeing the resignation in his eyes. He knew she was right.
"You should leave," Klaus told her, turning back to his painting.
"Maybe, but I'm not going to," This time, when Klaus turned, there was real anger burning in his gaze. He wasn't going to hurt her, not really, that much was clear, but he was still in no mood for her to be standing around. Maybe Lyn should have been more respectful of that but if so, this issue would never get resolved. "Nik, you have every right to be angry, I'm not discounting that,"
Klaus gave a humorless scoff. "Oh, really? Then what are you doing?"
"I'm telling you that all those years ago, when he first found out what you did to your mother, Elijah had every right to be angry too," Lyn told him and the anger in Klaus's eyes sharpened. "You can tell yourself that you were blameless in that situation but you weren't. And neither was Elijah."
"Elijah, made me into this! The heartbreak that he caused me—" Klaus cut himself off and Lyn could see the real pain in his eyes but it didn't soften her stance. "He is the architect of my cruelty."
Lyn scoffed, she actually scoffed. "No, he's not," She said firmly.
"Whatever defence you have in mind, Lyn, it is pointless."
"I'm not defending Elijah," Lyn told him. "I'm correcting your unfair judgement. Because from where I'm standing, yes, Elijah compelled Aurora, but he didn't compel you."
"What is that supposed to mean?" Klaus asked, his eyes blazing but the beginnings of doubt forming in them anyway.
"What it means is that Elijah didn't force you to be cruel. He caused you pain and you reacted to that pain with cruelty. At no point did he force you to do heinous things, at no point did he mind control you into committing acts of cruelty. You did that; all on your own." Lyn said, her voice firm and final. She looked directly into Klaus's eyes and could see that her words were starting to get through to him.
