If Lyn was being honest, she wasn't entirely sure how it had happened. It had started off great, living in Boston, attending Harvard, sharing an apartment with Elijah. It had taken maybe a month before it all went to shit. Alaric was dead.
The stupid ring had made him turn evil and then he had been given vampire blood and died. Naturally, the man had opted not to complete the transition and let himself die permanently. And, once again, naturally, that plan had been thwarted by none other than Esther.
She had somehow possessed Bonnie's body and gotten her to give Alaric her blood, allowing him to go full evil vampire hunter. The way he saw it, the simplest way to kill all the vampires was to kill the originals. Which meant that it was Lyn's family that was in danger.
"Are you ready, my dear?" Elijah said once he had loaded the last of their bags into the car.
"As I'll ever be," Lyn said faintly. Her statement was true, but that didn't mean she was ready. She was never going to be ready for this.
Elijah walked closer to her and moved his hand onto her cheek. "Are you sure you want to do this? Alaric will chase myself and my siblings around the whole world; there will be no settling down. You can still stay here, get your degree, live the life you want."
Lyn interrupted him softly, placing a hand on top of his. "The life I want is the one by your side. I love you, Elijah Mikaelson."
Joy broke out across Elijah's face, despite the horrible circumstances. "I love you, too, Emalyn Gilbert. Always and forever."
Elijah closed the distance between them and Lyn savored the kiss while she could. Before she had to return to the home she had spent her whole life attempting to get away from. But this time, it wouldn't be permanent, and, more importantly, she would have Elijah by her side.

There was no sense of homecoming when Lyn arrived back in Mystic Falls. All there was as she dragged her eyes across the picket fences and window shutters, was a tightness in her chest. She should have been used to the feeling by now, seeing as it had lived with her as long as she had lived in Mystic Falls. But being away from it all, having the life she dreamed of with the man she loved, it made the tightness stronger now that she was forced to return.
Elijah, ever the gentleman, walked over to Lyn's side of the car as soon as he had exited and opened the door for her. Lyn smiled at the gesture and took his hand, allowing him to help her out of the car. Despite the discomfort that being back at her childhood home brought her, Elijah's hand in hers allowed Lyn a small amount of peace.
She pulled her key from the pocket of her coat as they walked up the front steps. A click alerted them that the door was unlocked so Lyn pushed it open and was instantly met with the sight of her sister's stunned face. "Lyn," She said in shock. Elena's eyes trailed behind her sister to where Elijah stood. "Elijah,"
