At Indiahoma High School, the morning started like any other—until the front office door opened and Dougie stumbled inside.

Something was very wrong.

His lower lip was severely swollen, his face tear-streaked, and he was clearly in pain. He could barely stay still, rocking in place while clutching his belongings tightly to his chest. He couldn't explain what happened—he was nonverbal, severely autistic, and overwhelmed beyond his ability to communicate.

Mrs. Berger immediately stood up from behind the desk.

"Oh no... Dougie."

She guided him gently to a chair. "I'm going to stay with you, okay? You're safe right here."

Dougie cried harder, trembling and pressing his face into his hands.

Mrs. Berger hesitated, then spoke more carefully. "Unfortunately, I have to tell Mrs. Combs and your special needs teacher Dr. Carlock. I'm going to sit with you until Vice Principal Darlya Combs gets here. You look like you're in a lot of pain, and Mrs. Combs will decide where to go from there."

At the mention of Darlya Combs, Dougie panicked more. His breathing quickened, and he began shaking his head frantically.

"No... no..."

Mrs. Berger quickly reassured him. "You're not in trouble. You're not in trouble, I promise."

But Dougie couldn't process it through the fear and pain.

He rocked harder, sobbing silently and desperately.

Mrs. Berger tried everything she could think of.

She brought out his comfort items—soft toys, sensory objects, familiar textures. She gently rocked him in the chair beside her. She spoke softly, trying to ground him.

Nothing reached him.

Finally, she began singing quietly.

"Be strong and take courage..."

It was Voice of Truth, a song she had heard his fiancée Chloe sing to him before.

But even that didn't help this time.

Dougie only cried harder, overwhelmed by pain, fear, and sensory overload all at once.

He curled inward tightly, clutching himself as if trying to disappear.

Mrs. Berger softened her voice. "It's okay... I'm here. I'm not going anywhere."

Outside the office, footsteps began to approach—Dr. Carlock and others responding to the call—but for now, Mrs. Berger simply stayed beside him, keeping her presence steady and calm while Dougie remained overwhelmed, hurting, and unable to find words for what his body was going through.

TEMPLE SAID YOU NEED SURGERY I'LL DO IT

Dougie was still shaking in the clinic room, curled against Chloe with his plush Lightning McQueen pressed tightly to his chest. His fever had come down slightly at times, but his body was still clearly struggling—fatigue, infection, and pain all fighting against each other.

Dr. Fred stood near the monitors, expression serious as he reviewed the latest imaging and labs. Grace Muirhead stayed close, keeping everything quiet and steady.

Then Temple Grandin looked up from the scan results again, her expression focused but calm.

She didn't rush. She didn't panic.

She just said it clearly.

"He needs surgery."

The room went still.
