=============

Allies never were easy. If you wanted them, you had to prove your usefulness and strength. Because weakness does not earn loyalty. Not with the Oni. It didn't matter to the world; weakness is rewarded by either hurt or death. Betrayal on your side, or their's- it was all the same. All the same to a jagged body littered with faded scars. Bloodshed all you are good for... Expect... Regrets. Regret and guilt. You knew that too deep in your disgraceful, horrible soul.

"Mother has put me charge of your group."

So, you must be strong, to rid the shame from her betrayal.

"Splendid!" An Oni, a dog loyal to selfishness, laughed. With gauntlets of shadows she skimmed your arm. The Oni would not be loyal to you as your second in command. "Oh, don't look at me so guarded like that."

"You are dissatisfied. It's no wonder why. My only achievement was taking over scattered camps in your realm. Fighting worn men and women only possessing swords to the death."

And they were weak; a mantra you tired of repeating.

"You are ruthless. Yes, that is nothing, you haven't even seen a dragon, hidden away in our stronghold. Training against chimeras you created or Oni holding back. And you eventually stopped making them, because you felt bad for yourself! How pitiful... But I believe you saw that, asking for more. I, too, want more seeing you lead that charge back then... And now you have dared to show up here." The Oni simpered, her feminine face shifting to a man. "So, tell me. Didn't you and she fight, and that ended with a stab in your back? Or was your act that led you there, one too? To be frank, she didn't tell me."

You need to prove yourself something. Anything. But what?

"She wants me to prove myself." And you... You wanted- "But I am here... I am here to prove to her that we should be seeking justice."

You lie to yourself. What did you want? Oh, did that question fill you with shame. Red eyes of a little girl brimming with hurt, shifting to those old demons that praised your deadly, child hands. You hoped Faith escaped the war... Unlike that short passing of snakes and a village you treasured until its destruction. The dwelling that came after, posted in an abandoned village from your mother's side, was empty without anyone. Your mother was long ago only a shell. Your father had died by then. Those twins of light and dark filled you with a false rage you can't help but hold. Your mother confused you with searching: Who, oh, who should answer?! Who should answer... for how you looked up at the sky, after burning down homes...

"Justice? And how will you get it? Are you certain that is what you want?" He laughed, hugged his belly tight to wring it out. "By getting that old man's head?! By killing royal guards men?!" He pinched your cheeks, smiling proud. "You are foolish to be this selfish... I adore that."

You. For sins and more. Your own and others.

"You'll entertain it for a time, will you not?" You scoffed, rubbing where fingers pinched your face. Faces shifted around, molding to the youthful face of a woman...

The one that accompanied you to those deadly caves in the present.

"You will fail." Her hand treaded lightly on your bandaged back, the scar blackened. It whispered anger in your ears. Too painful and raw and fresh, wanting to be opened again. "What a thing she has done... through that snake- that worming dragon's curses. Listen here, your passions, your wants and desires, they will destroy you."
