It all started in the senior year of high school; the two met each other through a mutual friend. They were quick to connect and were always together. Nothing ever became of them more then friends though, but they always stuck through it together watching each other's back. When the dark day came and both of Kenneth's parents were killed, Lauren didn't leave his side for a week. When it came time for college, they ended up going separate ways, but still talked on the phone and still hung out on the weekends. They were so alike; they both even ended up getting jobs at their own individual college but in what would be considered the same department. Life continued just going pretty good for the two, they each had their own house and were living their own lives, but still through the thick and thin, they were both always there for each other.

Then Kenneth ended up finding himself with a second job working at the toy store, plus getting the full time position at the college. Lauren only had a part time job and no chance of getting a higher position. When it came around to the holiday season, Lauren found herself needing some extra cash, so Kenneth helped her get a job at the toy store. As much as the two enjoyed working at the same place, they kept their distance from one another just so nobody would start talking or spreading any rumors about them.

Time went on and as the holiday season came to an end, new hirers were finding themselves cut; Lauren however had proved herself during the peak time at the store and was chosen to stay on board as part of the team. Both her and Kenneth were so excited that she got to stay, they went out for a big meal that night, what they didn't know is that a coworker was going by and saw them in the window. The next day at work, he approached Kenneth about it.

"So, that new girl Lauren, you're hitting that, aren't you." Scott said approaching Kenneth in the back room.

"I don't know what you're talking about." Kenneth replied.

"I saw you two at the expensive restaurant the other day, don't try to hide it."

"I'm not hiding anything; I just don't know what you're talking about."

"Are you seriously going to try to tell me that you two are not together?"

"Get this through your thick head, her and I are not together, we are just friends, we have been for years."

"Yea, whatever, I don't buy it." Scott said walking off.

By the next time they worked, it was all over the store; coworkers were saying they were dating, sleeping together, screwing around, friends with benefits; it was spreading like a wild fire. It got to the point neither one of them knew what to do to. Kenneth found himself over at her house and they began talking about it.

"I can't believe we just went to dinner and it has turned into this." Lauren started.

"I know its crazy isn't it."

"I can't believe people would think that we were seeing each other."

"Is it really that hard to believe?"

"What?"

"That you and I could be together, I mean we have known each other for years, we get along great, we have always been there for each other, I mean why not."

"No, we can't, we have been friends for so long, and what if something happens, then we could lose everything."

"Maybe that's the way you see it, I think it could work out great for both of us."

"Maybe I should just quit the store, the holiday is over, I don't really need the extra cash and that would solve everything."

"It really doesn't, but if that's what you want to do." Kenneth said standing up and looking at her.

"Plus there is this whole dream of yours to become a detective like your dad; that worries me."

"Why does that worry you?"

"Look, go ahead and leave, I need to think about things."

"Alright, call me later tonight?"

"Sure."

Kenneth walked out the door and once it was closed, Lauren turned around to find a shadowy figure standing there in her living room. Later that day after waiting for her to call, Kenneth tried calling her but there was no pick up. The next day he found she just called the store and quit; no notice or anything. He went up to her college to see if she was there, but all he found is that she quit there as well, just gave them a phone call. He then went to her house, but the door was locked and no one was responding when he knocked. He had a spare key, and used it to get inside, there were broken figures and other items in the house, but nothing appeared to be missing. Her suitcases were still there, even her car was in the garage, she just up and disappeared, no trace to where she had gone.

It was a few months after that, Kenneth met a girl named Carmen at the college; she was sweet and seemed really nice and was really into the detective stuff that interested him. They started spending time together and eventually began dating, a month after that, Kenneth solved his first case at the college, and began making headlines as a young detective. It never left his mind though, just what happened to Lauren, it was the one mystery he was never able to solve, and the one that he regretted the most.
