"Have a good night Sam," said Tina- the local waitress he had been "wooing" lately, as Rob put it- with a smile.
He blinked, confused for a minute.
"What do you mean?"
"That's where you said you were staying?" she asked, pointing at the glamorous Ritz hotel behind him.
"Oh. Yeah, but I'll walk you home."
"Why? Nothing ever happens." Sam shifted, knowing very well that nothing happened down there, not with all the police cars patrolling nowadays.
"It's fine. I don't mind."
"But it's going out of your way," she said, frowning ever so slightly.
"It's not a problem," he said, attempting a smile, shifting again. She studied him with those beautiful brown eyes, as though assessing if he was going to try anything with her, or was lying outright about staying at the expensive Ritz.
"Do you think I can't handle myself?" she accused.
"What? No," he said instantly, balking at the accusing tone. He had only wanted to do something nice, spend that little extra time with her even after they had spent the afternoon together. "I know you can..."
"But you're refusing to go home when its right here," she stated, eyes never leaving him.
"I..."
"I can't believe you're talking me into this."
"I just want you to be safe," he blurted out. She smiled, the prior annoyance gone.
"Well, off we go then." Sam couldn't seem to find any words as she threaded her arm through his and tugged him off in the direction of London City Council apartments. But as he glanced down and saw the smile still on her face, he had a startling thought.
She had meant for him to say it out loud.
