Chapter 3
The day passed slowly, I had a few lessons with Kim but not many. Finally lunch came around and I was so hungry. I lined up and when I got let through, I grabbed the last chicken and bacon baguette, bought it and went and sat at mine and Kim's usual table. More of our friends sat with us; Katie, James, Chloe, Olivia, Amy and Max. Max was one of my best friends, alongside Kim and Chloe, and his eyes lit up as I took the seat next to him. Kim was already at the table.
"Well hello, birthday girl." Max chirped, smiling happily at me. Oh god here we go, he always made the table sing on someone's birthday, so I sat waiting for them to start. Max grinned at my knowing expression.
"Happy Birthday to you..." He started, the rest of the table started joining in, next thing I know, Emily, Sean, my brothers, Luke and some slut under Luke's arm were standing there singing as well. Emily was beaming; she loved celebrating birthdays. That wasn't something we had in common. Dylan looked amused as I shook my head and cringed when people started looking at our table. Finally they finished and I looked at Max.
"Thanks, but next year, please don't do that!" I told him, trying to look serious, even though I was fighting a smile. He shook his head at me.
"Sydney Jane Fowler, don't you dare stop me from celebrating your sixteenth birthday. Plus, you said that last year, proves how much I listened!" He replied, using my full name, sticking his tongue out at me. Kimberley laughed at us, she loved Max as much as I did. We were always going out to the movie's just the three of us.
"Happy Birthday Syd!" Olivia, Chloe and Amy chirped at the same time. I smiled at them; we were all close and spent some time together on some weekends.
"Thanks guys. Hey! Want to go to Roller World this weekend to celebrate? Like all eight of us?" I asked getting excited. I loved roller-skating, and luckily so did everyone in my little friend group. Someone cleared their throat behind me. I turned, looking up at Dylan, he didn't look too impressed.
"Oh, right! You eight can come to. It can be like my sweet sixteenth, but without all the people and food and dancing and decorations!" I chirped happily, pleading my brother with my eyes. He hated roller-skating but always came with me. He sighed.
"Fine, we can do that I guess. But you would have to meet us there guys. We don't have a big enough car for thirteen people." Nate said quickly. I jumped up and hugged him, they always tried to make me happy, but Dylan took some convincing when it came to roller-skating. Nate just went with the flow and I loved him for it.
"Yay! How about we all meet there at 1? After having some lunch before you come though, or we could go at 10 and have lunch after? What's best for you guys?" I asked excitedly, they all looked at me, excitement shining in their eyes.
"I like the sound of going at 10, anyone else?" Kim asked, looking at everyone at the table. They all agreed and we all started grinning from ear to ear. I looked up to see Luke looking at me, amusement clear across his face. He smirked at me and walked with the blonde girl to his usual table. I watched him as he started to kiss her in front of everyone in the cafeteria. I started to feel jealous but god knows why! I hated Luke so why would I be jealous of the blonde sitting on his lap? I looked back to Kim when he deepened the kiss.
"....So? What you think? Can I?" She asked suddenly. Crap! Had she been talking to me? Well done Sydney!
"Sorry Kim, what did you say?" I asked looking at her apologetically. She smiled at me looking knowing for some reason! "What's with the knowing look?" I asked, confused.
"Nothing, don't worry. Anyway, I said can I stay at your place tonight, to celebrate your birthday with you? Your brothers' won't mind and neither will Em." She asked, I loved when she stayed over mine; we had so much fun staying up late watching 21 Jump Street and Pitch Perfect. I never had to hesitate when she asked me that.
"Sure you can, Kim." I said smiling at her.
"And what about me? I can stay the night to right?" Max asked, laughing quietly. I looked at him with mock horror.
"Urm, well hey, if you want your ass kicked then yeah sure, why not?" I replied playing along. He cringed, probably thinking about my brothers' kicking his ass. His face turned scared and I burst out laughing.
"Omg, Max. That was too funny. But, no, you can't. Dylan would go mad and you know it." I said trying to calm down. I didn't want to faint in the middle of the lunch hall. He looked at me, worriedly as I tried to calm down. I stopped laughing and got my breath back, turning to Kim to see she looked worried too. "I'm fine." I assured them when I got my breath back.
I got up and grabbed Kim's hand and tapped Max on the shoulder lightly. "Are you coming, Max?" I asked him. I jumped out of his chair and we started walking.
"OK. Let's go, I want to start our favourite convo. Isn't Luke hot? I mean god! And Dylan...Wow!" She stated smirking, obviously imagining one of them topless. I cringed, this was nowhere near my favourite convo. "Urgg! Hell no!" I answered her, making her laugh. This was the typical conversation she started. Yay...not!
"Yes and I know you have a soft spot for Luke. Shame he doesn't feel the same, huh?" She asked suddenly. I froze. What did she just say? Me? Have a soft spot for him? Never in a million years!
"Well, you obviously don't know me at all, Kim! I hate Luke and you know it!" I told her, she smiled at me with the knowing expression again. If I had a soft spot for anyone, it was Jamie and everyone knew that. Just then Luke appeared.
"And, why's that then, Star? What have I ever done to you?" He asked faking hurt. He started pouting at me playfully. I just glared and shrugged his arm off my shoulder; he kept walking with me though. "What do you want Luke?" I asked getting slightly annoyed at him. "I've got History with you next!" He stated chuckling. I felt the blush cover my cheeks. "Right, I forgot!"
We arrived in History and suddenly someone's arms snaked around my waist from behind. I jumped and turned seeing Jesse Cooper. I cringed. Luke had obviously realised I had stopped, because he had turned. He looked scary angry. "Hello, my gorgeous girl." Jesse said, leaning in to kiss me.
I slapped him. "Get away from me Jesse. Now!" I told him. He smiled at my reaction and tried to kiss me again. "I thought she said leave her alone?" Luke growled, angrily, next to me. Looking up into his eyes while they were on Jesse I saw the rage burning.
"Whatever. I was just gonna deliver a message, that's all. Jamie wants to know if you'll go to the party at Cindy's next weekend." He asked, letting go of me, slowly. "Sure!" I beamed. Omg, I just got invited to a party! Jamie was good friends with Cindy so of course he was invited. I didn't mind tagging along, I mean, Dylan and Luke would be there, Nate would be there with Rosie and Emily would be with Sean so I wasn't exactly alone if I needed help.
Kim and Max gaped at me. "You're going out with Jamie? Why didn't you tell me? Us? We are your best friends after all!" Kim cried, clearly shocked. "Calm down, Kimmy. He only asked me on our first date this morning. Its tomorrow night if you guys must know!" I stated. They both looked even more shocked. "Birthday Miracle, much? You haven't shut up about him for the last six months!" She stated making me blush slightly.
We all took our seats, Kim to my left, Max in front of me and unfortunately, Luke to my right. He leaned in closer to me. "Can I copy your notes?" He whispered as Mr Hockney walked in. I looked over at him and shrugged. "Yeah" I answered rolling my eyes at him. He always just sat there chewing his pen. "For 10 pounds!" I added, he looked at me and sighed. "Fine." He hissed, handing me the money out of his wallet. I smiled. Boom!
Mr Hockney started talking about the First and Second World War. I took loads of notes and Luke copied after I had finished each sentence. I ended up using two pages for all my notes.
