Chapter 27
Luke's POV
Frozen in place.
I couldn't move.
The doctor made sure I was alright with the news before leading me to Syd's room. I walked in to see her laying on the bed with her eyes closed. She looked so peaceful. Her hair splayed across the pillow in all directions. One hand by her side the other holding her stomach. The doctor quickly moved her hand to take the pressure off her stomach.
It had been nearly two hours since Syd had had surgery and was put in her room, I sat beside Sydney, holding her hand, only thinking about what the doctor had said to me. I still couldn't wrap my head around it. The shock on everyones face, the anger in the twins eyes.
I started to wonder how long Sydney will be here for, the doctor said that she would wake up in the next month. All I knew was that I wasn't leaving her side until she was back in her house over the road.
Time was ticking by so slowly, I need to see the beautiful blue of her eyes, feel her hand brush through my hair, her soft lips to kiss my cheek. I just need her to wake up. I need to tell her what the doctor said, she'll be so devastated.
It brought me to tears. I couldn't believe it. I'd already vowed to myself I would stay with Syd everyday until she wakes up.
....................................................................
It had been three weeks since Sydney was brought to the hospital. Everyone tried their hardest to visit, but I kept my vow and stayed with her day and night. The nurses weren't pleased that I wouldn't leave, but I just couldn't leave her. I spent about ten minutes arguing with the nurse. After a while she started to annoy me, she only kept repeating the same sentence, "I'm sorry sir, but visiting hours are over."
Sydney started to wake up nearly a week ago, but fell back into unconciousness before she could do anything. I had been sleeping in the chair next to her bed, not the most comfortable place, but after all she has been through I think I can deal with it. My hand constantly held hers and I made sure someone was in the room, everytime I had to leave.
When I came back from going to the shop for a drink, I put my hand back on Syds, putting the drink on the side table. Not even five minutes later, I felt a small movement against my hand. Looking down, I waited...and then it happened again. Sydney's finger twitched slighly, before her hand tightened on mine. Without thinking, I leant over the bed and press the button on the wall to call in the doctor.
He entered the room nearly 30 seconds later with a worried look on his face. "What's going on? Has something happened?" I shook my head as he started checking all the wires, looking at the heart monitor constantly. But once he saw my head shake he relaxed slightly. "No, nothings wrong. But I think she's waking up, she sqeezed my hand." Just as I ended the sentence, she squeezed my hand harder. "Look!" I gestured to her hand moving in mine, tightening and relaxing.
The doctor looked at her hand, then looked to her eyes. I followed his movements and saw Sydney's eyelashes flutter slightly. After a few more seconds, her eyes cracked open the tiniest bit. "Sydney? Star, can you hear me? Are you alright?" I asked quietly, looking into the blue of her eyes as they opened wider. Her eyes found mine and I instantly saw the happiness in them. "Water!" She croaked, i instanstly grabbed the water bottle I had bought, undid the top and gave it to her.
She gulped down half of it before handing it back to me. Slowly she moved her arms and tried to sit up, but ended up wincing in pain. "Easy baby, take it easy alright? You had to have surgery, just lay back down." I instructed as I saw the tears well up in her eyes at the pain. I put my arm around her back and eased her back down onto the bed. Once she was down she buried face in the pillow and let a few more tears fall, before I leant down and kissed them away.
"Well, hello Sydney, I'm your Doctor, Doctor Hansel. I hope your not in to much pain, we had to give you some surgery to help with the abor..."
"Doctor, could you give me a minute to talk to Sydney please?" I asked, giving him a look that told him not to finish his sentence. Understanding crossed his face. "Oh, sure. I'll come back to check on you soo, Sydney. Before I go, just know that I am very sorry." He said, then walked out the door. My head snapped to Sydney's face to see if he'd given too much away. Her features pictured her confusion, her eyebrows furrowing and her nose crinkling.
She turned to face me, and I tried to mask my sadness. I could tell I didn't do a very good job as her confused expression only become more intense. "Can you come and lay with me?" Syd asked in a small, child like voice. I hesitantly sat on the edge of the bed as she slowly moved herself over. Once there was enough room, I lay down on the bed next to her, snuggling her into my side, her head resting on my chest. She moved her head so she could look at my face. "Luke? What was Doctor Hansel talking about? Why is he sorry?"
I didn't know where to start. So I started with her being ill for two weeks. "Well, as you remember you were throwing up for two weeks straight and you were putting on some weight, not slowly either, but you are still beautiful. Anyway, then you got kidnapped by your dad. You weren't far but he beat you a lot, because you wanted protect your sister. Only you didn't know then. The night we came to save you both, you got thrown into the edge of the coffee table and hit your belly pretty hard." I looked away from her tearfilled eyes and towards the ceiling before I continued. "When we arrived here, you were bleeding. My god, your were bleeding so much. It was mostly running down your leg. They immediately rushed you into surgery to try and stop the bleeding. But when the doctor came, he asked for your boyfriend. I stood up as soon as I heard the word and looked at him expectantly."
Taking a deep breath, I looked back down at her, the tears falling from my eyes and down my cheeks. She slowly lifted her hand to wipe away the tears, but more came quickly. "You were pregnant Sydney, we lost him, they tried to save him but because of the blow to your stomach he couldn't survive." I watched as the emotion ran across her face. Shock, anger, happiness, then the one I dreaded. Her face was covered with a heartbroken expression, her eyes quickly filling with tears again. She buried her face in my chest as the sobs racked through her body and I gently squeezed her as the tears fell.
I kissed her forehead and with a shaky voice continues. "But...the doctor...he also...he said..." I couldn't get the words out as I cried while trying to speak. Still sobbing, Sydney looked back into my eyes. I wriggled carefully down the bed and turned onto my side, so I was facing her and looking into her eyes. She looked back at me, the hurt in her eyes pained me. But I couldn't stop the smile from slowly growing across my face.
Syd only frowned at me as I continued to smile. "Babe? Why are you smiling? We lost our baby and you look like a child of christmas." She asked, as her frown deepened. I stopped smiling and gave her an extremely stern look. "Now, you listen her little missy, you got two more babies in that expanding belly of yours and you are going to be very careful, because we are not losing another child." I stated.
Her eyes widened and I laughed at her. "What?" Syd asked, the shock was clear. "That little boy we lost, he was a hero because he was protecting one of his siblings. That is how we will remember him, our little hero. But for now, you gotta take good care of yourself because you, star, are carrying twins. Our babies."
