*PRESENT*
RYAN'S POV

I feel like a robot. My legs are stiff and I can't think straight. Jen made it pretty clear she didn't want to see me again. It was heartbreaking hearing that. I know it was for her too, because when she slammed the door in my face I watched her cry for hours through her window. People walking by probably thought I was a stalker, but I didn't care. Jen was hurting and I couldn't comfort her.

I stop in front of her door. I can see her through the window. Her back is facing me but I know it's her. She looks skinnier. I sigh and turn the knob. This can go two ways.

"Go away." Jen bellows.

I walk in more and close the door behind me.

"I'm not gonna take the medicine," she says as she turns around. "So you can just..." Her words dye off as she realizes it's me. "R-Ryan?"

I smile and walk closer to her bed, "Hey Jen."

"W-what? H-how? W-when?" She stutters not being able to get out a full sentence.

"Your boyfriend..."

"I don't have a boyfriend!" She snaps.

I laugh and shake my head.

She gives me a death glare.

I sigh and walk right up to the edge of her bed. "I was kidding. It was a joke, Jen. Calm down."

"I can't calm down Ryan! Don't you get that!?!?" She shouts. Tears come soon after the words do.

I don't know what to do. Should I go and comfort her or stand back and watch. I hesitate for a moment then crawl into bed with her. I wrap my arms around her and pull her close to me. I'm careful to afford the wires and to be gentle with her bad leg and watch her stomach. Wow. She really is a mess.

"You look like shit, Jen." I say with a small laugh.

She looks up at me and whispers, "You look like you haven't showered in three days."

"That's because I haven't," I laugh.

Jen scrunches up face and a small laugh escapes her lips. "You smell bad," she whispers.

"I'm pretty sure it's not just me," I smirk.

Jen slaps me and I laugh and pull her closer to me. She sighs and curls back up against my chest.

"What do I do, Ryan?"

"I don't know, Jen," I sigh and rub small circles on her back. "I don't know."

*~*

"What happened?" Josh asks eagerly.

I don't answer. I walk further into the waiting room and sit in the seat furthest away from everyone else.

"Ryan," Josh says growing concerned. He takes the seat across from me and asks again, "What happened."

"I need you to do something for me, Josh." It hurts me to pass this up and give it to Josh, but I know it's the right thing to do. Jen deserves to have someone better than NIck. I would love for it to be me but I know that will never happen.

"Ryan?" Josh waves his hand in front of my face.

"Yeah sorry."

Josh gives me a weak smile. I can tell he's nervous. "I need you to take Jen somewhere."

"What?" Josh asked surprised.

"I talked to Nick and Suvil and they said it was fine if she went out for a few hours. I need you to take her somewhere."

"I can't do that," Josh says suddenly.

"Why not?"

"You made it possible, now you have to make it happen," Josh says sadly.

"Josh, she's pregnant with your kid. You can't avoid her forever."

Josh shakes his head and runs his hand through his hair.

"It is your kid, Right?" I ask, scared.

Josh nods and a wave of relief rushes over me.

"Then what's the problem?" I ask growing scared again.

"Nick said the baby's not gonna make it. He said its holding on by a thread." Josh whispers.

"Have you told Jen?" I say wide eyed.

Josh shakes his head. "I-I dont have the heart to tell her."

"You have to tell her man. Then you have to take her out of this hell hole and make her happy." I say growing angrier with every word. I don't even know why I'm angry. At the world maybe.

Josh sighs and bows his head. "Why don't you take her out?"Josh whispers.

"Because I have other things I need to take care of." With that I stand and walk to the exit door. "Tell Jen I'll be back as soon as I can." Then, I leave.
