happy labor day :)
"You better be nice."
"I'm always nice, what are you talking about?"
"I mean it, Caleb. Luke is special to me."
I watched him as he rolled his eyes while opening the diner door for me. Ignoring his annoyance, I walked inside trying to spot the tall, blonde boy. Finally I did, and Caleb and I walked up to the booth Luke was sitting in. I gave him an apologetic smile once he noticed me and who I was with.
"Hello, Rebecca...Dr. Allistair." Luke greeted us both as we sat down across from him. I hid my face with my hand nonchalantly, trying to avoid the awkward tension that was rising. I was reading through the menu when I heard Caleb's voice spark up conversation, "Call me Caleb, Luke. It's best to be on a first name basis if we're going to be seeing a lot more of each other. You know, since you and Rebecca are friends."
I flickered my eyes up at Luke to see his reaction and I saw him nodding, "Sounds good to me...Caleb." He said. I felt like I should say something because I could sense some attitude with the two of them, but I honestly didn't know what I could say. Ex boyfriend meets current fiancé; nothing could have prepared me for this.
Thankfully, the waiter came over before I could say anything, "Hey, guys. I'm Derek, and I'll be your server today. Can I start you guys off with something to drink?" He introduced himself while pulling out his pen and paper. Sitting my menu down loudly, causing all three of the boys to look at me, I spoke first, "I'll have an iced tea with lemon, thank you."
It was the first thing I said the whole five minutes we've been sitting here, and I was proud.
Derek wrote down my drink and looked at Caleb next, who ordered a water. Luke ordered a Diet Coke, and I couldn't help but to comment on it when Derek left, "Diet? What happened to your love for regular Coke? Watching your figure?" I teased making Luke chuckle. "There's something about the word 'diet' that makes me feel better about myself." He replied looking up at me with his beautiful baby blues.
Next thing I knew, I felt Caleb's hand find its way to my thigh closest to him. I didn't mind it, until it started to creep closer to my private area. Plus me wearing a dress, it wasn't the best thing for his hand to be pulling up the fabric in a public place. "So, Luke. How's your head doing?" Caleb asked.
"It's great."
"Seeing any black dots?"
Luke shook his head, "Nope, thanks for helping me out though, doc."
"Sure." Caleb spoke and his hand met with my heat. I jumped slightly, and I quickly moved his hand to his own lap. I gave him a warning look, as Derek came back with our drinks in hand. After ordering our food, we were left alone once again. It was going okay until Caleb decided to turn his filter off.
"So you guys dated?" He asked. I reached for my iced tea as Luke nodded innocently, "Yeah, seven years ago, before I joined the military."
"So you two have had sex?"
I tried to gasp while in the middle of sipping, and I choked on my iced tea. Pulling the straw from my mouth, I sat the glass back on the table and used my newly free hand to slap Caleb's arm, "Caleb!" I yelled in total disbelief that he just asked that.
He looked at me with a confused face, "What? I'm just trying to understand how serious you were."
I turned to face Luke with an apologetic look, "You don't have to answer that."
Luke sat up straighter in his seat before switching his glance from me to Caleb. Clearing his throat he replied, "Yeah, and she was the best I've ever had." He spat.
My mouth fell right open as Caleb slammed his fists on the table making the whole diner look at us, "Listen, dick-"
"Caleb, calm the fuck down. People are staring!"
"Language, Rebecca. God!" Caleb looked at me with a face of disgust. For some odd reason, he hated the f-word so I was never allowed to say it. Which was 110% of my vocabulary when I met him so it was an adjustment for me to stop saying it.
"Yeah, Rebecca. Watch your fucking mouth." Luke commented before taking a sip of his soda. I tried not to laugh, but it was difficult not to. You have to admit, that was a good joke. Caleb shot Luke a death glare, and that's when I decided to put everyone in the place right then and there.
I turned to Caleb, "You said you were going to be nice."
"I am being nice. Sorry I'm not happy when a guy is making comments about having sex with my fiancé." He said back to me. I faced Luke who looked like he was enjoying every minute of pushing Caleb's buttons.
Getting fed up, I reached for my purse and pulled out a twenty dollar bill to cover my part of the check and sat it on the table.
"Let me up." I nudged Caleb in the side with my elbow. He gave me an apologetic look, "Please don't leave, love." He begged. I narrowed my eyes down at him and tried to look as pissed off as I was, "Caleb, I mean it. Let me up." I demanded.
Caleb finally got up from the booth, and I stood up while looking back at Luke, "I'm sorry, we can reschedule for another time." I told him.
"The hell you will." Caleb commented.
I took off before I could listen to anymore banter between the two guys. I left the diner and met with the streets of New York, only to be followed by Caleb. He grabbed me by the wrist and pulled me back to him, "Are you seriously going to be mad at me instead of him?" He questioned.
I nodded, "Yes, Caleb. I asked you to be decent because he's important to me, and you totally ruined it with your goddamn jealousy."
"It's obvious he's still in love with you, Rebecca. He's been a problem since he came back into your life!"
"He isn't the problem." I spat before shaking off his grip and walking away from him.
This time he didn't chase after me.
