Luke is 29 today.

I pulled my most business-looking shirt over my head before leaving Luke's bedroom to walk down the hallway. I was fixing my right cuff when I came into the family room where Luke was sitting down on the couch watching a football game from last night.

"Who's winning?" I asked while standing behind him. He jumped slightly from the sudden sound of my voice and craned his neck to look behind him. He looked up at me and smiled toothlessly, "Patriots." He responded. I nodded not really interested in the first place. I never understood American football and why it was such a huge deal.

"Why do you look all fancy?" He asked while moving his head back to face the tv again. I walked around the couch and sat down next to him, "I have some job interviews today." I replied. I watched him closely and studied his every move. He was down, I could sense it.

"That's great." He tried to sound excited, still staring at the tv. I pressed my lips into a line and glanced down at the floor. I wanted to bring up last night to see if he remembered anything and if so, what. But I wasn't sure how to approach the situation. I wasn't sure of what would set him off.

The silence between the two of us became so unbearable, I found myself reaching over him go grab the remote and shut off the tv, "Can we talk about last night, please?"

He looked over at me with risen eyebrows, "What do you mean?"

"Do you remember any of it?"

"Yeah, you took my meds because you don't trust me anymore." He pointed out.

"Luke, I did it because I love you. I don't want you hurting yourself." I scooted closer to him. He gave up the hard-ass act and held out his hand for me to place my own in. I gladly did, and I felt his thumb rub my knuckles gently, "I know." He whispered quietly.

I suddenly felt guilt wash over me. Was I really going to leave him again to go to some job interviews? Did I trust him to be alone? I can't leave him again, "You know what? I'm staying with you today. The interviews can wait." I told him.

He shot his attention towards me again and quickly shook his head, "No they can't. I don't want you missing job opportunities because of me."

"I want to stay with you today. Plus, it's your birthday so how can I leave you alone to fend for yourself?" I flirted and moved to swing one leg over his lap. I straddled him as his hands found my hips, "I thought you forgot." He commented with a small smile. I returned it and shook my head, "Nope. Happy birthday, Hemmings."

He picked his head up to lean in which closed the gap between the two of our lips. I brought my hands up with either side of his neck and trailed my thumbs along his jawline. His beard felt scruffy underneath my fingertips. One of the things I secretly loved.

His grip on my hips tightened as the kiss grew more passionate. I tore my lips from his and began kissing down his neck. He let out a quiet sigh as soon as I did so, and I felt one of his hands press into the small of my back, pulling me closer to him.

"You're going to be late for your interviews." He pointed out in a weak voice. I continued to leave soft kisses on his neck before replying, "I told you I wasn't going anymore." I smirked against his skin.

"Rebecca."

"Luke."

"Rebecca."

"Luke."

I removed my head from his neck to look at him. He had an annoyed look on his face so I decided to see what was his problem, "What? Do you not want me here?" I questioned. Luke quickly softened his face and shook his head, "No! Of course I want you here. It's just-" He paused.

"It's just what? You can tell me." I encouraged.

"It's just, I'm ashamed that you had to see me like that last night. I feel like I'm holding you back. Hell, I ruined your engagement and wedding." He spoke while pushing me off him so he could stand up.

I landed on the cushion beside him on the couch as he stood up. I quickly followed him, "Luke, you didn't ruin anything. It was my choice to be with you. Please don't blame yourself for that. And about last night, everyone has their moments. You're human, Luke."

He turned around to look at me, "I didn't want you to ever see me like that."

"You don't have to hide your feelings from me, Luke. I love you. I want what's best for you. You've seen me at my breaking points, so please don't be ashamed of yours." I reached out for his hand. He was hesitant at first, but then he finally let my fingers intertwine with his. I walked up to him and hugged him. My free arm was wrapped around his waist as his other hand was placed on the back of my head, pulling it into his chest.

"I love you, too." He replied after a few seconds of silence. I pulled away and looked up at him with my chin resting on his chest. He looked down at me as I did so, "Come on, let's get you out of the house."

"And do what?" He asked.

"Anything you want, birthday boy." I smiled.

He returned it and removed himself from me. I watched as he went to go grab his house keys and wallet, "Follow me."
