Dark Day

I ignored Midnight and my hand inched closer, it shocked me! Like a black lightning bolt, it hit me right on top of my hand and left a mark. My hand twitched harshly as I started smoking. The hole disappeared and left a spot on the ground. I blinked and took a deep breath. That was, familiar however that hurt. My twitching died down after a moment. However on my hand was a mark.

"Ow." I hissed in a quiet voice. It hurts to the point that I'm screaming on the inside. I looked closer at the black thing, it was so big that it almost covered the top of my right hand. It was a perfect star with one point at my middle finger and another point at my thumb. I need to find a way to hide this, but it's a pitch black star. It looked like a permanent tattoo, just a lot darker. I just covered it up with my sleeve, but it's not that noticeable, right? I grabbed the tape off the kitchen counter and ran back up the stairs. Tyler looked at me and Midnight was already here. How does a kitten move faster than me up the stairs?

"Hey, what took you so long?" He asked. I pulled my sleeve a little more over my hand. Well, maybe it can't be all bad, who looks at hands anyway?

"Nothing, I just had to wait for my mom to stop using it," I stuttered, walking back to my box. Though actually, I have no idea who had it.

"Well that's funny because I thought I saw her in the backyard and your brother with the tape,"

"Oops, the wrong answer," I mumbled, he crossed his arms with a frown. "Well, I don't know,"

"Tell me what actually happened,"

"Nothing happened, it was just a long walk." I sighed firmly. I grabbed a poster, he took my hand and put it down.

"We're friends, right? That's what you said,"

"I don't know what you want me to say," I said and looked down.

"I want you to tell me what happened." I didn't have any other excuses. I have to come clean, but I don't know if he would understand.

"So what happened was..." and I explained everything. I even showed him the mark on my hand, he didn't seem surprised. He was actually totally fine about it.

"This has happened before. C'mon, I'll show you all I know about the moving black void," He replied, then we went down stairs.

"Wait, I did all that for nothing?" I asked. it makes me feel like I had no reason to hide it.

"I just wanted you to tell me so I can tell you how to deal with it,"

"How long have you known about this?"

"Not long," He answered quickly as we reached the bottom.

"Hold on," I said before we went out the door.

"Mom! I'm going for a walk!" I yelled from the living room.

"Wait and hang on, where are you going?" She asked.

"Over to Tyler's house,"

"Who is Tyler?"

"Mom, I just introduced you to him!" I shouted in frustration.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Just give me ten minutes! I'll be back,"

"Alright, ten minutes. If you're not back, I'm walking over there." I rolled my eyes and dragged him out. We ran over into his room. He closed his door and locked it. His room was like a small library with very old books and tall shelves. He had his bed in the corner next to the door and a bean bag chair. He went to one of the shelves and picked up a rough, big, and black book with a lock. The key hole was in the shape of a star. He held the book in front of me and the star on my hand burned.

"What am I supposed to do?" I asked.

"Look at the lock and look at your hand, figure it out." He stated. I raised my hand and pressed on the lock.

*Open.* I focused hard and the stars on my hand and on the lock lit up. The lock clicked and I took my hand off, the book looked like it was smoking.

"Oow!" He cried, as he took his hands from the book. However, the book stayed floating in mid-air. I gazed into the book and it started flipping pages, going chapter after chapter about every page describing the star symbol and the powers that come with it. It stopped in the first chapter and the first sentence said was:

"The star symbol can be treated as a curse or a gift, with Fire of the Super Nova as the first ability." So I can control fire? I grabbed the book as it was still smoking and my hands were set on fire, but it didn't hurt. I kept hold of the book but I was hypnotized by the dark blue fire around my hands.

"I'm glad it didn't leave a mark." He sighed looking at his hands. He looked up and saw my hands, still in the trance of the fire. It seemed everything changed to tunnel vision. Everything around me was faded and colorful patterns were placed in front of me. It was changing constantly in color and shape, however my mind could not pin down what it was. An aching feeling was starting to spread from my hands to my body. My flames went out as soon as the feeling hit all of me and dizziness came soon after. I staggered then fell hard on the floor.

I woke up in a bed with blurry vision, what did I do? I tried to sit up but someone put me back down.

"Easy, your powers got the best of you and you passed out." I heard a familiar voice say. Powers . . . must be Tyler then.

"Why can't I see clearly?"

"The first side effect of the mark,"

"How do you know so much about this stuff?"

"You're, you are not the first person that this has happened to." My vision was starting to clear up. He had a triangle on his hand. I sighed, however, it looked like the sun was going down.

"Oh man, I gotta go!"

"Oh, I forgot you can't be out longer than ten minutes,"

"How long has it been?" I asked frantically.

"About seven minutes." Wait, I was unconscious for five minutes? That's strange but I can ponder about it later. "Wait, what's your number?" He asked as I was getting off his bed. I quickly wrote it down on his wall with my still burning finger. Then grabbed the book and ran down stairs. The aching feeling was still throbbing in my chest while walking across the street.
