Chapter 14

Marcus’ POV

I ran around the camp searching. She has to be here somewhere. Where would she be hiding when it’s sunny? The trees? I walked over to a patch of trees which covered our camp from the enemy. The darkness of the place scared me. It brought back the feeling of being possessed. I breathed in and out, shook my hands and walked forward.

“Mel, Mel where are you?” I shouted.

A crunch of leaves came from behind me and I span around. She was there. Her red eyes glared at me. Her shoulders back and her hands making fists at her sides. I don’t think she can tell who I am now. Has it been that long since I had seen my friend?

“Mel, it’s me Marcus.” I said.

Her shoulders sank and she smiled. She hugged me and laughed.

“I have come to ask you for a favour. You know that Paige is hurt bad, when I left her in the hospital she was nearly dead. Please save her.” I asked.

She paced back and forth. Wondering about it for a few seconds she turned back to me.

“Are you sure this is what she wants. Would she want to become one of my kind?” she questioned.

I knew what she meant by her kind but I ignored it. I nodded my head. I didn’t know if this is what Paige wanted but I know that she doesn’t want to leave.

“Then we must get to her.” Mel smiled.

At that moment she flew passed me so fast I had no idea what was happening. It was like she was in a hurry to Paige which I knew she wasn’t. It hurt Mel to change someone into a vampire. The first time I met her she was in denial of what she was and now she is going to change Paige. She doesn’t want people to be like her, she thinks they are so lonely but I know Paige will never be. I will be there. I ran to catch up. That wasn’t going to work but I kept running anyway.

I reached the operating room. Everyone was crowded around it like something was happening. What had happened? I pushed through the crowd to see Mel being beat up. A tall strong man was beating her and everyone just stood there watching. Angry seared through my veins. Really, this again?

I pushed a man from in front of me and ran into the side of the jerk beating up my friend. He landed on the floor with a thud cursing me. I turned to Mel offering her a hand. She took it and I pulled her up of the floor. She had blood all over her face.

“Go back to the forest where you belong freak!” someone shouted from the crowd.

I couldn’t point out who had said it but I wasn’t gonna let that go.

“She one of us and she is no more of a freak then you lot. You are beating up someone who is on our side. If you can’t accept that you might as well leave now.” I said as calmly as I could.

I turned around and headed to Paige. I helped Mel but she was healing fast.

We reached Paige’s bed. She looked closer to death than ever. I could feel the tears forming in my eyes but held them back. I’ve got to be strong for the one I love or this isn’t going to work. Mel sat on the chair by the side of Paige’s bed and looked at her.

“This isn’t going to be easy Marcus.” She sighed.

Oh no she’s doubting herself.

“You can do this. I know you can. Please Melanie. I wouldn’t ask if she didn’t mean anything to me. I know you won’t hurt her.” I begged.

She gave me sympathetic eyes. I could tell she knew it hurt me seeing I had done this to Paige. I had made a lot of mistakes in my life but I would never forgive myself for this.

“What’s it like, not being alone?” She asked.

“You’re not alone. You have been my best friend for as long as I can remember. You have me.” She smiled.

“Barricade the door, Make sure no doctors can get in or they will try to stop me.” She told me.

I did as I was told and pushed a cupboard in front of the doors. I hoped it would be enough to keep them out for now. I walked back over to Paige and held her hand. Mel was preparing to change her. She looked like she was concentrating on something. I didn’t know what. She looked up at me and I nodded my head. She bite into Paige’s wrist and blood dripped from it. I had to look away as she continued to bite her wrist.

Paige’s POV

The sun shone down on me. It seemed to be shining brighter than before. I looked around. I was sitting on a blanket under a tree on a hill. The hills lead to a long patch of flowers and puddles. Birds sang on the branches above me. I sat back and listened to them sing. I watched as the clouds passed me by and I smiled.

Still sitting back I realised the birds had stopped singing. I could see the sky darken. The clouds turned grey and lightening came from them. I got up quickly and hid under the big branches. Something hit my shoulder and fell to the floor. My eyes turned to it. The bird that were singing lie dead on the ground. I ran from the tree to the patch of flowers. The bright colourful flowers had turned black and died. I looked around and the ground which had been full of grass was brown and cracked. I put my hands up to my face and gasped. My finger caught on something sharp on my face.

I pulled my hands from my face and saw blood coming from my finger. I was more than scared. I ran over to the puddle and looked at myself. I could see my blurred reflection and started to cry. My normal green eyes were replaced by bright red ones. I had fangs covered with blood. What had happened to me?
