XIII.
"Astrid! Matteus!" I said out loud as I searched the villa for the cheeky kids whom I allowed to play around the whole villa. I was starting to regret that decision as I searched high and low for them, from their bedroom to the staff kitchen and even the various bathrooms the estate had to offer.
"Astrid! Come on, we're having dinner now!" I continued as I walked around. "If you keep this up, you won't get supper! Matteus?!"
"...Why do you always have to make me feel like it's my fault?! Why is it that you always make me feel bad whenever we have to touch on these kind of topics?! I don't understand you, Christoffer, please just enlighten me without putting some random blame on me," I heard a familiar voice muffled from behind one of the doors, sounding desperate and upset about something.
I immediately stopped in my tracks, knowing whose door that was and whose voice it was. It was a much personal thing altogether, so I didn't walk up to the door and put my ear against it, but I just couldn't move away from the situation happening on the inside.
There was a tensed silence behind that door before a reply came. "You want to know why everything sounds like an accusation from me whenever we talk? It's because I don't trust you anymore." The cold and sharp reply simply sounded less appealing than the silence before that.
"I thought we were over that." I could hear Margaux's heartbreaking response. "I thought we were both over that! It was years ago, Christoffer! And it was you who initiated everything! You went out to bars, hung out with women more beautiful than me, and got drunk, but I never said anything more because I love you. And then you continued your habits, cheating on me with other women, so how can you not trust me after everything that I've done but everything you never did?!"
There was a momentary pause before she continued, sounding more calm than when she was yelling at him. "I never did anything wrong, Christoffer. It was simply what you assumed, and how you allowed your emotions to overrule your judgement. It's not me, it's you."
The door was yanked open, and I stared up at Margaux who froze at the door, her bloodshot eyes wide in surprise as I could see the trails of tears down her face. She looked down, sniffling as she wiped her tears away.
"Excuse me," she muttered before continuing on to her intended destination, walking past me as she left the door open.
"Maeve, I'm so sorry for keeping Astrid & Matteus for so long," I heard Caterina say down the hall as she walked behind Astrid & Matteus with a smile on her face matching the small ones on her younger siblings'. "They found my private spot in the villa and they didn't want to leave—"
She stopped when she reached me and glanced at the open door of Christoffer's bedroom, where Christoffer stood there looking at us, motionless with a blank face. Almost immediately, I closed the door without him asking so.
Caterina raised an eyebrow. "Uhm, I'm not trying to pry, but was there something wrong—?"
I glanced at Astrid & Matteus who also seemed to have seen what had happened. Astrid was awfully quiet, while I didn't know what was going on in Matteus's little mind. "Yes, there was, but I don't think I should talk about it." I told her, ushering them out of the halls. "Let's go down for dinner."
