Sarah-
"And the winners are...Sarah and Spencer!" Katie shouted at the top of her lungs.
"Yes!" Sarah jumped into the air.
"You guys did do pretty good." Colin pointed out, rolling his eyes playfully. "I'll let you two win this round."
"Draw?" Spencer raised his eyebrow and glanced at Sarah.
"A draw it is." Sarah and her group raced Spencer's group to the prize box. She stood back and waited for all of the groups to pick out what they wanted. "Are there any water guns left?" Sarah rummaged through the box. During the past two weeks, Colin and his team decided to ambush them with a water gun fight that no one was prepared for. She was so going to get him back.
"Well, you can have mine if you want." A small girl handed her water gun to Sarah.
"Oh no. That's fine." Sarah would have felt bad taking it from that girl, but it was generous of her to ask. Spencer reached over Sarah and grabbed a green and purple kazoo from the box. "How the heck to you even play these things?"
"I dunno. Try blowing in it?" Sarah picked up two funky straws.
Spencer focused on the kazoo and blew. Nothing. "This thing is rigged."
"Let me try." Sarah wiped it around the edge of her shirt then tried. A soft and low buzzing noise came out.
"See? What did I say? Rigged." Spencer huffed.
"Just try it." Sarah wiped the kazoo off again and handed it back.
"Fine, but it's not gonna work. Thing's freaking sexist." He tried. Sarah completely zoned in on Spencer. Like the grass of the front lawn disintegrated, and there was no one else but them. The same weird buzzing came out, but much deeper.
"See? What did I say?" Sarah mocked Spencer's slight country accent.
Spencer was not amused.
"What?" Sarah laughed at the seriousness in his face. He cracked and started laughing too.
"I've got an idea. Try it again." Sarah placed two straws into the end of the kazoo. Spencer played and the straws flew out. "Dang it. I thought it was going to work."
"What were you trying to do?" Sarah heard him ask, but was way too deep in her own thoughts to answer.
"Maybe... if... You stay there. I'm going to get more straws." Sarah walked over to the box and grabbed a handful of the weirdly shaped straws. When she looked up, she noticed all the campers were busy mingling with each other.
There wasn't a camper doing something that they weren't supposed to. "Purple" is what they'd dubbed it. The mixture of the colors pink and blue. No PDA, cuddling in the corners, or anything like that was allowed. It was the beginning of the week though. Sarah was more worried about the end of the week. Kids move fast.
The only thing they were waiting on was Chelsea to come back for proper introductions and camp rules. Sarah sauntered back to Spencer, monitoring the campers along the way.
"Okay, so maybe if I put enough in, it'll stay and maybe the sounds will be different."
"What are you doing? Changing your major to engineering last minute?" Spencer raised his eyebrows.
"Shut up."
