Sarah-
"Let's go! Let's go! Let's go!" Angie squealed at the top of her lungs. She slid a tray with frozen patties onto the picnic table. Angie'd been wearing the orange bathing suit she'd blown up Sarah's messages about. "Sarah! Can you help me get the fireworks out of the car?"
Sarah nodded. Her own heart was racing for some reason and she didn't know why. She'd put so much thought into the simple light blue three-piece bathing suit that she wore.
"And what I meant wa- Hey, are you okay?" Angie had been rambling away and Sarah hadn't been paying any attention whatsoever. She jumped.
"Oh. Yeah. I'm good. Haha." Sarah laughed nervously. She immediately reached for a box of fireworks to distract herself.
From what? She was still trying to figure that out.
Angie continued to talk in the broad daylight about the summer adventures, but the more she talked, the harder it was for Sarah to stay focused.
Eventually, some of Angie's friends came over. Sarah'd invited some of the other counselors, but she wasn't sure if they were coming or not. She was pretty sure they'd go hang out in their own homes for the break week.
Pretty sure.
Alyssa showed up about five minutes later, but she carried a bunch of kids with her. "They'll only be here for a couple of hours, I promise!" She hissed as the children raced into the lake.
"Oh I don't mind! The more the merrier. Hey, I'm Angela, but you can call me Angie if you want." She waved briefly at Alyssa before going back to set up the table.
"Hey, I'm Alyssa." She smiled back then plopped down on the bench mumbling to herself. "All I wanted was a day off, but no 'Oh take them with you!' She says. 'It'll be a fun experience!'" Alyssa mocked the owner of her part-time job.
"Well, at least you're not a third wheel?" Angie shrugged.
"Who are you third wheeling?" Sarah furrowed her eyebrows. "And don't you dare say me."
Angie held a smug expression on her face. "Fine. Spencer."
"Oh. Is she in on it too?" Alyssa pointed between them.
"In on what?" Spencer strolled towards them, twirling his keys between his fingers.
"In on how dang good you are at grilling Spense! Ya gotta teach us sometime!" Angie waved.
"Uhh thanks." He wore a confused expression.
People that Sarah didn't know started to trickle in.
"Hey Spencer. This where the night is gonna start?" A black haired guy carried a case of beer and two cases of root beer. When he saw Sarah's glance at the cases, he laughed. "Some people drink. Some people don't."
"This is my roommate Corey."
Angie started talking to Corey, and the children were slowly making their way back towards the food. "Quick! Hide the boose!" A girl that came with Corey hissed. Alyssa slid the cases under the picnic table.
"Heeeyyy! Miss Alyssa! What are we eating?"
Overhearing the question, Angie perked up. "Oh, I can cook some hot dogs for them if they want."
"I can do it." Spencer shrugged his shoulders. "Just keep them busy until I'm finished."
"Okay. Sarah, let's go!" Angie pulled Sarah by the hand, and led her to the squalling children.
