How He Asked You Out

Alby: Newt approached you late one afternoon, passing on the message that Alby wanted to see you in the Homestead. It sounded pretty serious so you went right away, all the while trying to figure out what you could have done wrong, and why Alby just wanted to meet with you. When you arrived at the Homestead, Alby was standing in the middle of the meeting room, alone, rose in hand. He smiled when you entered.

"I hereby begin this Gathering", he started. "First on the agenda: would (Y/N) consider being my girlfriend?"

Second on the agenda was your first kiss.

Gally: Gally took a while to pluck up the courage to swallow his pride and ask you out. You were both builders, and were fixing part of the Homestead when he mumbled something to you.

"What was that Gally?"

"Oh, it was nothing, never mind."

You could tell he was trying to say something important, but you just let it be, working for a while longer in silence. After a period of time he spoke up again.

"Here."

He gestured to the plank of wood in front of him and there, engraved into the wood, were the words WILL YOU BE MY GIRLFRIEND?

You were taken aback but acted quickly, carving into the wood below:

OF COURSE

Minho: You two were both runners, and had stopped for a lunch break, sweaty and out of breath.

"Be. My. Girlfriend." Minho panted out.

"What?" you thought you'd heard him wrong.

"I said, be my girlfriend" he tried again.

"Is that a command?"

"I am Keeper of the Runners, and you are a runner."

"How romantic" you rolled your eyes at him.

"I wasn't finished" he pressed. So you waited.

"I'm the Keeper of the Runners, but you're the Keeper of my heart."

You lost it.

"That is the cheesiest pick-up line I think I've ever heard!"

"Well, there's plenty more where that came from."

You paused.

"I don't need to hear any more."

Minho's face fell, and you grinned, knowing what you were about to say would surely change your relationship forever.

"I don't need to hear any more because the first one worked."

Newt: Newt frowned, scratched the back of his neck, and glared at the ground for the umpteenth time that night. You'd been up for quite a while- not saying much, just appreciating the quiet- but there was something considerably off about him tonight.

"Can I ask you something?" he said. It startled you, considering neither of you had said a word for the last half hour.

"You can say no", he continued. "I won't be offended, I just thought I'd try my chances."

"Of course, Newt, ask away."

He hesitated a little.

"Y'know, before you got here, I was thinking, what is the point in this shuck place? What are we supposed to gain from this whole shuck place? There wasn't much bloody hope to throw around, that's for sure. But then the box brought you up, and the game was changed. I thought they'd started sending girls, but when Alan came up next, well, I just assumed you must be special in some way. And you are, (Y/N). You brought me hope. With you here I feel as though I can accomplish anything- even that which seemed impossible before. You've given me the strength to keep going in this cruddy place. I only wish I could return some of the favour to you."

Newt swallowed hard before continuing.

"(Y/N), would you make a miracle happen? Would you make me even happier than I already am with you here? Would you be my girlfriend?"

And after a speech like that, what girl would say no?

Thomas: He'd been very quiet recently, and moved away whenever you came near him. You'd catch him watching you out of the corner of your eye, and when you turned to look he'd look away. He didn't speak to you, and if you ever came up in conversation with another Glader, he'd change the subject. It was at a Gathering where you finally decided you'd had enough. You'd asked him a question and he turned the other way, starting up a conversation with Minho. You decided enough was enough.

"Okay, what is your problem, Thomas?!"

The room went silent, and Thomas' head snapped around to face you, obviously startled.

"Wh- what do you mean?"

"Your problem, Thomas. What is your problem with me? Why won't you talk to me?"

Thomas went a bright shade of red.

"I- um- I think we should discuss this later."

"Really, because I think we should discuss this right now. This is a Gathering after all; this is where we try to sort out our problems, not avoid them."

You stood there with your arms folded, waiting for his response. He fidgeted under your glare and the stares directed at the two of you from the other Gladers.

"No, I- I really think we should discuss this later."

You'd had enough.

"Fine, Thomas, if you really want to be that way. Fine. If it's not something you can say in front of the group, then I don't think I want to hear it at all."

You turned to Alby.

"I'm sorry, Alby, but I can't continue with this Gathering knowing that someone clearly has a problem with me that they aren't willing to address.

You turned to storm out the door, stopping in your tracks when you heard Thomas yell after you.

"I like you (Y/N)!"

You pivoted on the spot, looking for any sign in his expression that he was joking.

"I really, really like you, and I'm afraid of ruining our relationship by letting that show through."

"So, you just thought it'd be better not to talk to me at all? To ignore me?"

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be." You considered your next words very carefully. "I like you too."

Somebody sniggered from the corner of the room, which was quickly followed by an 'ow' as they were promptly elbowed in the ribs.

"Here, let me make this easier for you" Alby piped up from his position in the middle of the room. "I hereby pronounce you girlshank and boyshank. May your annoying lovey doveyness never make its way back into this room again, nor may I ever see you giving each other that shuck look you're giving each other now.

You and Thomas broke eye contact.

"Enjoy your relationship, shanks. I'm glad I could be of assistance. Now let's get back to this Gathering."

A couple of the Keepers clapped at Alby's speech, but you were too preoccupied with one thought:

You were Thomas' girlfriend.
