Alby: An Opinion

A/N: A couple of you supported this idea, and I'm staying up to watch the Black Sticks play Australia (yay hockey!) so I thought I should probably update (sorry I've been so slack recently).

Basically, just hear what I have to say and jump in with your own opinions too :)

Ok, here we go...

I believe Alby is actually the strongest of all the Gladers. I know, bold statement, but bear with me. Just think about it; if you're chucked (haha CHUCKed) into a freaking huge and terrifying maze and have no clue why or how, you wouldn't exactly be volunteering to take charge would you? 

Of course, Alby was only made the leader shortly before Thomas arrived, but he has things pretty well under control (aside from a few verbal slip ups in the beginning). When you consider that he's had to take charge immediately after his (probably very close) friend has died (assumedly down the box hole), it just makes him seem that much braver, keeping in mind that he's, what, only 16 or 17 years old? I certainly wouldn't be willing to take charge after something like that, and I'm even older than he is (#mazerunnergrandma).

But, it's in Alby's nature to just do what has to be done, and I think that's what kept him going for so long, and what eventually killed him.

Speaking of which: Alby's death. Literally runs at a hoard of Grievers in the slim chance that it might save his friends and lead them to escape.

Woah.

All the while he has to keep in balance his friends' need to escape, and his knowledge of the world out there and all the reasons why they shouldn't. He knows things about the world out there that very few others know, but he also knows how important this is to the other Gladers. Its their escape. It's what they've wanted to do from day one.

Eventually he decides to help them achieve their own goals. It really goes to show how much Alby really does care about the wellbeing of the group. It's all he's ever really cared about. Though he does this through doing something that is so out-of-character and so drastic, that it really does make you realise how much the Changing does actually screw up a person. It makes them do things that they probably would have been horrified with before. 

Okay now the way he speaks to Newt is so shucking important too. It's not hard to see how much Alby really cares about him, and how much he wants Newt to know that he cares about him. This is another way Alby looks after the group. Through keeping Newt happy and feeling wanted- important- , he gives the rest of the Glade hope (because can you imagine if Newt had carried on the way he had, everyone would have been more than a little panicked and despairing).

Now, to Thomas. Obviously, Alby's a little new to the whole "leader" thing when Thomas shows up, and he's the first Greenie he has to deal with since the last leader's death. But imagine trying the be the leader when this new lunatic comes in trying to run the maze and pretty much fight the Grievers on his first day. It'd be like trying to control a chihuahua with rabies, on drugs, who also happened to know how to run really fast and ask just enough questions to annoy everybody.

But Alby tries his best. And in the end he does succeed, even if Thomas doesn't seem to like him that much. He's always just doing what's best for the Glade. He's doing what keeps people safe, alive, and busy. That's Alby's job.

Also, I quite enjoy how Minho gets to boss him around a bit because nobody can say 'no' to Minho. Except Newt sometimes. And Thomas. And eventually Jorge. Okay so maybe Alby just has a soft spot for Minho and that's pretty darn cute.
