The ride to my house was silent. James never made a sound, and I was too ashamed to initiate the conversation.
"I'll see you tomorrow." James says opening the passenger door for me. "Look James I..."
He cuts me off before I could finish, "We don't owe each other an apology." My heart broke hearing him say this; we don't owe each other anything. This reality was painful to hear. "Do you wanna come inside? There is a lot I want to show you..." I ask wanting to make amends. Parting ways when we are both angry makes me feel uneasy.
"I can't today. I have a date with Sarah." James said quietly, but it cut through me like a knife. I gripped my books tighter, "Oh... yeah of course." I say giving him a fake smile before walking into my house unable to watch him leave.
"How was the first day of school with James?" My father called out from the inside of his office after hearing me pass his room. "Surreal." I say. Quickly, I go into my room not wanting to go into details about how heartbroken, both James and I are after ONE day of school.
I lay in bed staring at my ceiling. "What are we doing...? We're idiots." I say talking to myself. A knock at my door snapped me out of my daydream. "Ma'am Lustre, there is someone here to see you." I jump off my bed upon hearing this.
As soon as I get to the stairs I regret ever leaving my room. "Shit..." I gasp quickly hiding behind one of my father's prized Roman statues. "What the hell is Eli doing here??" I ask myself. I sprint back into my room. "James where are you?!" I say as soon as James answer's his phone.
"With Sarah. Make this quick." James snaps at me. Regret surged through me like a bullet. "Nothing, never mind." I say thinking how stupid I was for think James would help me. "NADINE YOU HAVE SOME EXPLAINING TO DO. HOW CAN YOU DO THIS?!" My father yelled barging into my room. Without a goodbye, I hang up on James.
"Dad I... What are you doing here?" I quickly say unable to think of anything, my mind on complete panic mode. "YOU HAVE A BOYFRIEND AND YOU DIDN'T TELL ME???!!! DO YOU KNOW HOW EMBARRASSED I AM?! WHAT WILL THE REIDS THINK??!!!!!!" He yelled enraged.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I was with Eli before I found out about James! I'm sorry I should have told you! I'm wrong! I'm sorry." I say in between sobs. I was ashamed of myself. My father has a name to uphold especially with the magnitude of his business. "What will everyone think when they hear that you are engaged but have a another boy as your boyfriend?" He continued to express his frustration.
Unable to think of anything to make me look better in my father's eyes, we head down the stairs where Eli awaits for our arrival. As soon as I make eye contact with Eli, there is nothing but resentment in my eyes. "What is this?!" I hiss making sure my father did not hear a thing.
He gives me a smile completely unaware what he has done. Of course he didn't know... No one knows that I am engaged to someone else. "Hello Mr. Lustre, I'm Eli Aquino. Nadine's boyfriend." He says proudly, wrapping his arm around me to give me a quick hug.
My heart began to beat faster and faster, unable to defend myself. "Nadine never told me she had a boyfriend, is that why you decided to come here?" My father continued. "Yes, because I believe that there are no secrets in this world." Eli responded sending chills down my spine.
Before I could add anything to the conversation, the doorbell rings. I quickly run to open the door, desperate to get away from my father and Eli. Opening the door, I see James standing in front of me.
