I took a seat in the other chair next to Alpha Wyatt. I wasn't too nervous, but I wasn't comfortable at all. Being in the presence of the Alpha was one of the most overwhelming and intimidating feelings you could experience. His mere presence reminded you how worthless your stature was next to his. I wondered how his son or his wife felt when they were around him.
He gave me a curt nod before leaning into his seat in the other chair. I watched wide-eyed as the principal left the room, leaving the two of us alone. I let my eyes fall to my feet; I didn't want to meet his penetrating brown eyes.
"I'm sure you must be wondering why you're here," I heard him say, but I couldn't bring myself to look up. The urge to be submissive was overbearing and humiliating. So I simply nodded for I feared what my speech would reveal. I guess he understood the effect he was having on me since he didn't comment on my resort for gestures instead of words. "I've been monitoring the youth of this pack for sometime, and I have to say, you're unique."
I had to look up from that point. Something I did or something I was doing had caught the Alpha's attention. I couldn't read his blank expression, so I had no idea what to expect from that observation. Was I in deep trouble, or was I about to receive some instantaneous award.
"Why, sir?" I asked timidly.
"It's something in particular." He squinted at me. "You're one of the few who hasn't received their wolves yet." I pressed my lips into a thin line. "It's understandable for you since your dad was human. But the little things you do every day at your training, the way you stand up to your trainer when everyone else seems so fearful of him." I knew where this was going. He was probably going to call my mom in and have me kicked off the team. Why was I panicking when this was what I really wanted?
"I am so sorry for my behavior," I profusely apologized. I covered my eyes with my hands. I wasn't even a wolf yet, and there I was giving the people who probably had the ability to make me better, a hard time.
To my surprise, he chuckled. "I forgot to mention how I observed you never give up, even if you know you don't stand a chance."
"Wow." That last part hurt me. But what could he possibly have in store for me?
"You have a lot of potential. You can be a human warrior for our defense team." A human warrior? What the hell was that? "I'm giving you this offer now but don't worry, I'll give you some time to think about it. I will want an answer from you in three days for the most. Is that clear?"
The coach had nearly choked me to death, and he thought I had potential... potential to die? I laughed bitterly to myself earning a stern look from him. I cleared my throat.
"Yes sir," I nodded quickly and stood when he did to shake his hand. A firm grasp he presented.
"We'll see later," he said and left the room after dismissing me. I walked back to the cafeteria, making a beeline for my table. I must have seemed shaken up since Paige was seating there patiently with curious eyes. They were screaming, "Tell me now!"
I did a double-check before I decided on telling her about whatever I discussed with the Alpha.
Sure, she was my friend, but I wasn't sure whether the Alpha wanted me to go blurting out information at this time. I had to formulate something quick.
"Well," she asked impatiently. What happened?"
"Oh, the principal was just checking on my academic performance," I lied. She narrowed her eyes but didn't push it.
