All the others were swift in their physical movements, except me. I was exhausted from the excessive exercise, but they didn't want us to stop.
I huffed in annoyance as the head trainer, Murphy, barked orders to continue until the sun disappeared behind the hill. He was one of the strongest people I knew and for one thing, he was desperate to make sure no one could reach his standards. But of course, who would dare to complain? The whole school was scared of him regardless.
I sat down on a wooden bench watching the others struggle to make it across the field without falling over. They were all trying to please Murphy but I wasn't up for it.
"Sam," Murphy grumbled as he approached me from his standing post. I rolled my eyes. It was only a matter of time before the scolding began. "I clearly remember stating that everyone was to be making laps around the field."
"Well I didn't feel like it," I said shrugging and returning my attention to the group of teenagers still running along the borderline of the field. His jaw clenched.
"Sam, you're supposed to follow my orders, not throw them to the curb."
I merely shrugged. I didn't want to be here. It was evident that I wasn't suited for this and yet, here I was. I somewhat expected it, but it happened so fast. A deep escalated into a roar and before I knew it, I was dangling from his grasp on my throat.
"Don't you dare defy me," he snarled. "You have no idea what I'm capable of." I was struggling to get oxygen down my windpipe before I began to fall into unconsciousness. I scratched at his hands to set me free but his grip tightened around my throat, closing on my airway. I partially blamed myself for pushing his buttons, but I couldn't resist.
"Murphy! Let go of the student," I heard someone say and within seconds I collided with the soft grass beneath me, coughing and gasping for air. I didn't look up until I was certain I could breathe. My head was slightly spinning from the previous encounter but I didn't worry too much. Slowly, I peeked through my eyelashes. Ms. Phillips seemed worried but all I received was a death glare from Murphy.
Ms. Phillips was the one who owned these stupid training classes that my mother had somehow convinced me to join. I don't know how she came to hire Murphy as a coach, given his known violence to the youth who disobeyed him. Yes, Murphy was an excellent fighter and yes, he was a top soldier in our defense system. But as a teacher... it wasn't working for me and it certainly was not benefiting him.
"Sam, are you okay?" Ms. Phillips asked, helping me up on my feet. I dusted my knees before nodding to her and she sighed in relief. "Murphy, what have I told you about handling the students like that!" she hissed, turning to face him. "One more incident like this, and I'm removing you from this program." Murphy didn't seem a bit bothered. He scoffed and stormed off leaving her with wide eyes as she glared at his retrieving figure.
"Well, I think I'll go home now," I said and took my bag off the bench. Ms. Phillips forced a smile. I spun on my heels to walk out of there the fastest I could. I didn't want to be here anymore.
"I'm terribly sorry for what happened. I assure you that I would deal with him," she called. I frowned. She looked scared of him and that made me wonder what was she really going to do. I nodded to make her think I believed her so that she would leave me alone so I could go home.
I lived on the outskirts of town and I liked it there. There was not much commotion and the area was almost isolated with a few houses here and there. My family owned a huge piece of land with an average house on it. I walked up to my front door and set my things down on the couch in the living room in search of my mother. She was supposed to be home for the whole day. I took a smell from the kitchen immediately and followed it. She was standing over the stove stirring a pot. I made my home a safe haven for ugly days like today. Her home-cooked meals were always something I could look forward to.
"Samantha, are you just going to stand there or help me set the table?" She always called me by my whole name when she was scolding me. Without uttering a word, I walked towards the cupboard and began taking plates and glasses out. I always questioned why she made me set the table when it was only the two of us. "I heard that the Alpha's son is ready to find his mate," my mother said. I cleared my throat. I never really cared about what the Alpha and his family did. As long as they kept the pack in order, I was fine. "I want you to be there," she continued. I almost dropped a plate.
"What's the point?" I asked, frowning. I never associated myself with the popular crowd, which is where I assumed the lucky girl would come from. I had my own circle of friends, or rather a friend and we stayed clear of that group in particular. They caused trouble everywhere they went.
"I don't know. It's just a feeling. But mothers always sense when good things are going to happen to their children."
"Mom, if you keep going down a path like that, you're just going to be disappointed... over and over again," I sighed.
"Oh darling, don't say that. You have to believe in yourself at some point." I rolled my eyes. She came over enveloping me into a big hug. I enjoyed the affection but I was sure that disappointment would come her way when another girl walked up the pulpit to be Luna. Besides, I hadn't even connected with my inner wolf yet, so it wouldn't be possible, even if it were true.
