Six days later...

I walked passed home with a wide grin, hopping up the stairs, Paige a few steps behind me. I knocked on the door, waiting patiently. Paige and I had been able to bond quite much near the lake, but she was still hiding something from me.

I leaned against the wooden door, frowning at the fact that I couldn't even hear whether she was at home or not, due to the fact that I had no wolf abilities at certain times, which seriously sucked at this time. If I had what everyone had, Louise and her friends wouldn't be able to push me around as they did. Life would have been a whole lot better, and I'd probably even have a few more friends, than just having Paige at my side.

My ears perked up once the door opened slightly and my mother's head peered through the crack. Her eyes widened once she realized it was me, smiling widely as she rushed out to give me a large hug. I hugged her back, burying my face in the soft material of her blouse.

"I'm so glad you're here," she whispered into my ears, her velvet voice relaxing me further. "And hello Paige," she continued, acknowledging her presence.

"Mom," I started once we'd pulled apart, staring at each other. I was already getting comfortable from just being in her embrace, but I had to do what I really came here to do. She opened the door all the way, and motioned her hands for us to come in. I had some news for her.

Paige followed me into the living room, making ourselves comfortable. My mother eventually emerged from the kitchen with a tray of scones and a small jug of juice, which she placed on the table. She then sat opposite us, straightening her skirt.

"What is it honey?" she asked, once we'd grown into an uncomfortable silence. I took a deep breath, pulling a golden lock from my face.

"The Alpha, thinks I've progressed very quickly in my training." From the corner of my eyes, I could have seen Paige reaching for a scone, licking her lips in delight.

"Well that's wonderful," she chipped, laughing a bit. I downcast my eyes, suddenly really interested in the dark rug. "Is there something else?" she asked, sensing my uneasiness.

"W-well, he thinks my ultimate test would be going on an actual mission and he wants me to spy for the pack," I replied, wincing once the gaiety she possessed, drained into anguish. "I won't be alone," I quickly added. "I'll be with a well-trained and experienced team."

"I don't care," she retorted, standing from her seat. "I don't want any daughter of mine being sent into some secret, deadly operation!" I rolled my eyes, assessing her behavior as an overreaction.

"It's not a secret operation. It's like a spy job... which is basically what a secret operation is, but that's not the point. There's no mass killing," I replied. "Right Paige?" I turned to face her.

"What?" she asked, her mouth filled with scones, like a squirrel that stuffed its jaw with acorns. I looked to the tray, my jaw falling open once I realized that about three-quarters of the scones were gone.

"It's still dangerous!" my mother argued, her hands shaking at her side. I rolled my eyes in irritation.

"Mom, I'll be fine." I rose to leave. We couldn't stay any longer is she was just going to fret. I didn't need any negative energy on my side. "C'mon Paige," I tried yanking her from the chair.

"Sam, you're don't even have your wolf yet!" she yelled, the tears rolling down her cheeks. "Think about what you're doing!"

"I have, and I know it hurts, but I've come to face it. Truth be told, my wolf may never come. So let me contribute whatever I have to the pack, while I can." Those little signs I was getting, may be all I would get. I pulled Paige towards the door, pulling it open.

"Sam!" my mother called, still standing there, her eyes puffy and red. I didn't listen, as I took one step down the stairs and unto the small footpath that was in front of the house.

"Sam!" she called a bit louder. I continued walking.

"SAMANTHA!"

"Are you sure you're ready for this?" Alpha Wyatt asked me while he buttoned my thick bulletproof vest. Normal wolves didn't require these things since they healed fast, but I did. Such a pity. I breathed deeply, nodding my head. "Okay, this is for you to kept in contact with us," he said, placing a small device in my ears. "And this," he continued, giving me a small gun. "Is for if anything goes out of hand. Remember, be quicker to use your defensive skills to inflict wounds than this device."

"I understand." Alpha Wyatt always believed that whether there was an enemy or not, there should be the smallest amount of bloodshed.

"I think you might be needing this," Smith added, smiling as he handed me, the bow and arrow. I frowned, confused but still took it.

"But I haven't mastered it yet," I complained.

"I know, but I have faith you can do it." I still was against using it, but I agreed to nonetheless. Alpha Wyatt summoned me to follow him outside, where the vehicles were being loaded.

"Now, this is a top secret mission. I only agreed for you to tell your mom so she won't think we've left her out. Other than that, no one else," he lectured with Smith nodding in approval. I cringed remembering Paige was there when I told her. We soon stopped at a large table with a wide map spread out across it. "This is where we'll drop you off. We won't be able to go any closer since the wolves guarding would be able to smell us from a mile off."

"But won't they be able to smell me?" I asked, looking up to him.

"Sure they would. But all they'll smell is a human. That spot there," he pointed to the green patch on the map. "It's a hiking trail and humans usually wonder off the path, so there's a very low chance that they would come and investigate what's going on."

"I see," I replied, lifting my arms as Smith fixed the dark jumpsuit I wore.

"Now all we need is some proof on them."

"Proof?"

"I have reason to think that they're kidnapping wolves from other packs and experimenting on them," Smith interjected. "We can't just barge in there if we don't know whether it's true or not." I nodded, fixing my hair into a ponytail as soon as Smith was done. "When you're done, don't linger around. I want you to return to the pick-up point afterward. And return in one piece."
