I sat in the middle of my bed. My eyes were pinned on the smooth surface of the long mirror before me. Dreading every physical aspect of myself with dreams to be prettier. I tried pulling my frizzy bronze hair into a ponytail, but I felt it revealed my horrid hazel orbs that seemed to stand out before every other feature on my face.
I tore my eyes away from the mirror and fell on my back against my bed. The harsh winds outside my window made the thought of inside seeming more comforting. I thought about phoning Paige for the past few days but I never found the bravery to do it. I didn't want an unnerving conversation over the phone. The girl was hell-bent on torturing me.
I turned my side, still debating whether to call her or not. I really had something important to tell her. I didn't think it needed to wait just because of some stupid challenge she'd accepted. I grabbed the phone from my nightstand, my hands trembling in fear of the outcome. I slowly dialed her number, wishing time would slow down just for me to rethink my decision, but I'd already tapped the call button without knowing.
The dial tones were testing my inner ability to remain calm. The red button was right there! I could have canceled anytime, but I didn't. Eventually, the sounds broke and her faint voice called a soft 'hello' from the other end of the line. I mentally scanned her voice before proceeding to continue the dialogue.
"Paige, it's me," I tried, with nothing else in mind to say. She breathed deeply on the other end of the line before answering, clearly trying not to laugh.
"Yeah, I know. I er... have you as a contact... What is it?"
I remained silent, not sure how to summarize my words. How would I ask someone how they really felt about me, and worst of all, how would I react if they didn't know the answer?
"Is this about the challenge?" she continued, sounding a bit bored.
"No. I... I..."
"Sam, I think I'm going to end that. It's not making progress," she huffed.
"That's not it actually. I just wanted to know if..."
"If I'm still talking to you?"
"Yeah, you haven't called or anything lately."
"Sure, it's just that my mom's new boyfriend is quite something."
"Do you want to talk about it?" I asked before she could change the topic. It was a habit of hers when emotions took over. I sensed this was a sensitive subject."I could come..."
"NO!" She yelled. "I mean no. It's fine." I heard shuffling on the end of the line. "It's just... I have to go," she said, abruptly ending the call. I pulled the device from my ears, flustered by her brusque ending. I didn't even get a chance to ask the question. I sighed is desperation.I rolled completely unto the bed, pulling the duvets over my head and laying there in silence. I normally plugged my earphones in, but I wasn't in the mood for music. I was about to fall into a pit of my own faults, but I couldn't have helped myself nonetheless. I felt as helpless as ever. It wasn't long before I drifted off to sleep after the rain I was awaiting began pounding on the roof.
I had that nonchalant feeling at the moment, relaxing my head into the soft material, extolling my own scent in the sheets. I almost fell into a content slumber when I was jolted from my sleep by a loud banging on the door downstairs. I heard some shuffling, a door being opened and then some voices.
I tiptoed to my bedroom door, the cold air immediately attacking me as I peeped through the crack. I was surprised to see Alpha Wyatt speaking to my mom. I attempted to go back to my room unnoticed but they managed to see me before I even moved.
"Sam! You have a visitor!" my mom called with a stern look, shaking her head at my foolishness. I nearly tripped several times coming down the stairs. It was something about the Alpha that made me nervous. Maybe the fact that he looked so much like his son, Gabriel. He smiled softly at me after giving my mother a reassuring look. "Sam, you should pack your things quickly," my mother said quickly after letting out a huge sigh. She seemed proud yet frightened.
"Pack my things? What for?" I questioned, knitting my brows in confusion.
"Well, I think it only makes sense if you move into our quarters for training," the Alpha spoke. He seemed determined with whatever plans he had in store. "When I called you at school in the principal's office, I meant what I said in there. I do see true potential in you, no matter what you think."
I stared at his brick wall face, no signs of jokes or pranking... It was just too real to be true, and it wasn't even three days yet. Somebody, apart from my mother actually did see something in me.
"Thank you," I managed to squeak out.
"Honey, don't keep the Alpha waiting. Hurry," she scolded gently and I quickly ran up the stairs to change from my night clothes and begin my packing. I stuffed as many clothes and shoes as I could, so much that the bag could barely zip. I pounced down the stairs in excitement, gripping at the handles of my bag, a bright smile on my face.
"I hope you find him," I heard my mother seriously to the Alpha before she turned to face me. I frowned in confusion but decided it wasn't my business. "Be good Samantha," she whispered in my ears before giving me a tight squeeze. I nodded obediently and walked down the stairs, the Alpha following close behind me.
I almost squealed as soon as we got into the large, tinted jeep that was parked in the entrance of our yard. Even as we drove off at top speed, I waited to wake up.
