Picture of Paige Crest
***
The weekend approached so fast but it didn't cheer me up as I expected it to. I was near the lake with my friend, Paige, trying to catch some fish as they came and went. I wasn't with her, my mind was far too busy. I had never taken into consideration the thought of being the Alpha's mate until my mother had brought it up, and now it was stuck in my head.
Was it really that good as it seemed? Right now, it was the only thing people couldn't shut their mouths up about. All the pretty girls were trying their best to impress him every time he walked by. They were practically throwing themselves at him as if they were some stray whores on the streets. As if that would help his wolf to connect to theirs. I scoffed, unaware that Paige turned to stare at me.
The things people would do to get power and fame, I thought. I turned my attention to the deserted lake in front of us. Soon winter would arrive and the surface would be frozen, depriving us of access to the welcoming waters. I watched as Paige threw her string into the water and pouted when nothing came up. I almost laughed but stopped myself.
"Are you just going to sit there?" she asked, clearly annoyed. I didn't even realize that I was staring at her when I noticed her gaze on me. She seemed amused and before I knew it, she was directly in front of me. "I wonder what you're thinking about," she said, laughing a bit. "It's about Dale, isn't it?" Dale was one of the most well-known boys in the pack for his looks apart from the Alpha's son. I thought it was coincidental, given that they were actually best friends. Paige had a deep crush on him, but whenever she wanted to talk about him, she pinned it on me. I guess that's how her denial worked.
"Sure," I said, playing along. "I'd just love to spend a night with him." I burst out laughing once I caught her scowl. That was the look of jealousy right in front of me. She was that difficult.
"We need to find you a date," she grumbled and began to walk away to pick up her fishing tools. "I think we should head to town." I nodded, already bored with the fishing activity. I followed her into town, noticing how busy the streets were. People were getting prepared the little get together that was occurring tonight. And by people, I meant us, teenagers. We normally did it around this time of the year. It was kind of like a bonfire or something.
"You're coming tonight, right?" Paige asked turning a bit to face me. We were currently crossing a street. I really didn't want to go but her pleading eyes had me caving in. Even if I did say no, she would force me. I nodded to her knowing I would fully regret it. "Great!" she squealed, jumping up and down like some crazy person. We caught some weird glances from people passing by. "I picked out the perfect outfit for you!"
I rolled my eyes. I knew this was coming my way. Now that I thought about, I never did get to pick my own clothes when I went out with her. How absurd!
"I'm not going half-naked," I said to make sure I made myself clear. We walked around town for a good amount of time until we got tired and decided to eat something. We stopped at a small café to order something light and took a sit outside on a table for two.
We sat in silence. Paige was texting away from her phone while I was busy staring into space. The sky was darkening by every minute that passed, indicating that the day was quickly coming to an end. It was funny how everyone went through the same process every day, even if it each one was supposed to be a different experience.
At some point, all things will come to an end. Our work, our goals, our families and eventually our lives. I usually thought that that's how close we all get once the sun sets over the horizon... one day closer.
Paige's phone began to ring and she answered it immediately, mumbling some words and nodding her head. Soon, her eyes flickered to mine apologetically before she stood up.
"I have to run, but I'll be back. Promise me you'll stay here?" she whined, clasping her hands together and pouting. Rolling my eyes, I let out a huge sigh and relaxed into my chair. She left swiftly, and I stayed pulling out my own phone, tapping at the screen since I had nothing else left to do.
A cool breeze blew slightly, causing me to shudder. Suddenly I felt a warm material being pressed against me and soon enough, the one person I'd never expect was sitting across me.
"Well you look surprised," he said smirking. I could have felt the blush rising to my cheeks as much as I fought to keep them at bay. I noticed his deep brown coat had been placed around my shoulders. "I'm sorry, am I disturbing you?" he asked, his smile falling as he took in my silence. My face must have seemed conflicted.
"Oh no!" I said, finally speaking. I put on the most convincing grin. Soon enough, his smile returned. "Just surprised me."
"Sorry about that. I'm Dale," he said reaching his hand out and I shook it gently.
"I know. I've seen you around. I'm Sam." What was I doing? What was going on? I peered around to see if this was a prank.
"Sam... I like it. I'm hoping I'll see you at the bonfire tonight?" he asked. I nodded slowly in reply and he got up from his seat. "Great, I'll see you there. You can keep the coat by the way," he said smirking and walked away, leaving me stunned. It didn't take long till Paige came bouncing my way.
"I'm sorry I took so long but I had to get... What have I missed, and whose coat is that?" she asked, placing her hands on her hips. Her well-shaped brows raised.
"It's nothing really." I waved a hand to dismiss the question. "Let's go get ready for tonight."
"Oh yeah, of course," she replied. That was enough to get her distracted. I sighed in relief. She had a serious crush on Dale and I didn't want to get her hyped up about something that was beyond my control. I'm sure he wasn't being suggestive. Dale was just being the flirtatious person he was. There was nothing more behind his kind warm smile.
