Imagine: Finding out just who River Song is to the Doctor.
"...you were with River, weren't you?" the faint voice of Amy Pond filled my ears as I looked up from my book. I was sitting in the library, and I was honestly surprised to know she was awake. It was quite late, or at least in the TARDIS it was. Rory and Amy had went to bed ages ago, but I simply wasn't tired, so I decided take a journey of the literary kind.
"Why would you say that, Pond? I can go out on an adventure by myself and not bump into River, you know," the Doctor's reply was accompanied by footsteps as I saw them walk right by the library.
I closed my book and set it on the chair beside me before getting up and quickly making my way towards the doors. I peeked my head out to see him and Amy walking down the corridor, towards the console room. Being the eavesdropper I am, I followed close behind them.
"How is she?" Amy asked with an obvious smirk on her face. What is she going on about? Since when has she concerned herself with the two of them? There was nothing between them...was there? No, of course not. Someone would have told me, wouldn't they?
"...fine," the Doctor muttered, "Now, go to bed, Amy. It's late."
"Tell me about it!"
"There's nothing to tell!"
"Come on! You had to of done something! I dunno, have tea with Einstein?"
"Don't be daft," he went silent for a second, "We did that last week."
"Oh really? How many times have you seen her?"
"Only 3 times, Amelia."
She laughed, "How adorable!"
"Goodnight, Amy," his voice sounded a tad stern, making me frown. Why was he so worked up over it?
I hid around the corner Amy finally went back to her room, laughing all the way there. What the hell was that about? What was the Doctor doing with River, anyway? I mean, I know they're friends and all, but I didn't know he went to see her while we were all in bed.
"You can come out now, [Y/N]," the Doctor's voice made me jump, but I did as told. He was leaning against the console, his arms crossed, and his eyes on the ground.
"Hey..." I walked towards him.
"Hello," he looked up at me, "You know, it's not polite to eavesdrop."
"Learned it from you," I commented.
He sighed and leaned his head back, "[Y/N]..."
"What's going on with you and River, Doctor?" I asked, wanting to know. Well, part of me already knew, but the other part was desperately hoping I wasn't right. It couldn't be...
"I'm not completely sure yet," he shook his head, "But I have an idea."
"She's your wife, isn't she?" I looked down, trying to ignore the pain in my chest.
"It would seem that way, yes," he stood up straight and wandered around the console, "I'm sorry-"
"Don't apologise," I interrupted, curing the break in my voice.
"[Y/N], I do care about you, you know that," I felt him take my hands, but I yanked them away. He told me he cared about me...he told me he loved me!
"Evidently not!" I stepped back, "And to think I actually believed you..."
"I do love you," he said softly. "More than anything, but I can't help what happens in the future, [Y/N], you know that!"
"Maybe taking her on little dates sends the wrong signal, don't you think?" I glared a bit.
"They weren't dates! I was merely trying to learn more about her!"
I shook my head, fighting back tears, "You know what, Doctor? Have fun with River. She's obviously better for you than I am. She's smart, she's beautiful, she's everything I'm not!"
"Don't say that. It's nowhere near the truth!"
"Says who?"
"Says me! I love you, and only you, for Rassilon's sake! So what if I marry her? That could be centuries from now! Right now, I just want you, and only you," he took my hand and pressed a kiss to the back of it, "I'm so sorry I hurt you."
I gulped and looked down. I've loved him for so long now...and the thought of him moving on hurt so much. He was suppose to be my Doctor...but even I knew that I couldn't be with him forever. I'd leave him behind some day, and now that I think about it, I don't want him to be alone. He deserves to have a hand to hold.
"I just want you to be happy," I sighed, lacing our fingers together, "And if River makes you happy, then please, don't hesitate to be with her."
"You make me happy!" he replied instantly.
"And you make me happy..."
A smile formed on his lips, "Yeah?"
"Shut up. You know you do," I chuckled.
He grinned and pecked my lips, surprising me, "Now! Where would you like to go?"
"I have no idea," I shook my head, "But as long as I'm with you, that's all that matters."
His smile widened, making me smile as well.
He may not be mine for forever, but he was certainly mine right now, and that's all I could ask for. All I know is, if River Song ever even thinks about hurting him, I'll be sure to personally change her mind.
